Hey Emily! 2020 has already been a great year for you – catch us up on all you have had going on.
Hi! 2020 is a year of growth for me so far. Lots of fun performances have already been done and a lot more on the books already! I am really excited for the rest of the year. I’ll be playing out locally in Los Angeles a LOT coming up and also working in the studio on writing my own material.
So you have been coined ad the “rock violinist” which is so rad! Share more with us about how you got started?
Yes, more specifically, I have been coined “Not Your Typical Violinist”. I am proud of it! I have known from a young age that I would be a pro violinist. I also knew that I would be doing something very different with the violin. I grew up on Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Its A Beautiful Day, The Beatles, The Doors, Alice In Chains, Mad Season, Metallica, Bowie, Black Sabbath, etc etc etc!! I remember listening to Hendrix’s solos and being fascinated by the way he “painted” with his guitar. Thats what I wanted to do with my violin. I started as a classic violinist. When I started lessons, I couldn’t get enough. Eventually, I ended up going to college for a music degree. Again, I couldn’t get enough, but I felt I was not getting the diverse exposure that I was seeking. I started going to the pub next door after my waitressing shift everynight and met every band that played. Soon, I was playing with every band, sitting in and really getting the experience of improvising, and tuning in my rig. That is where I learned so much!
What is it like being a female and playing rock music on the violin? Have you had any favorite collaborations?
Although there are more females ever in the music industry today, it is still a male dominated industry. I grew up with five brothers, so I am very used to being with “the guys” and getting along with everyone. I think as a female in this industry, you just have to know your sh*t and stand up for yourself. Just be confident. I have collaborated with a lot of artists. It is hard to say what my favorites are! This is the year of collaborations for me, stay tuned to see what I’ve got cookin’!
If you could only pick 5 – who are your top 5 inspirations musically?
Oh that’s tough! I get inspired by so much…. Top five for me right now would be:
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Alice In Chains
4. Rival Sons
5. Soundgarden/Chris Cornell
