-Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Downplay”?
Yes, I’m super excited about this release and all the new music to come. “Downplay” will be the leadoff single for the next era, so to speak.
-Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I had recently gone through a break-up and had to deal with running into my ex while out with friends a few times.
-How was the recording and writing process?
“Downplay” was the very last song I wrote on a writing trip to LA last summer. I had recently gotten out of a relationship and my co writer, Brooke Jenkins, brought the title and it immediately struck a chord with me. ARYAY played us this track he had and I was like, “that’s the one,” and we got to writing! ARYAY’s brother, Glowmo, was in town visiting and joined our write- he ultimately came up with that catchy, chorus melody. I had my producer, Yuval Maayan, finish out the production and it became what you’re hearing now!
-What was it like to work with Yuval Maayan and ARYAY? How did those relationships develop?
Yuval has produced all my music since I moved to Nashville really. We met in Nashville and he’s become a great friend and collaborator. I got connected to ARYAY through a mutual friend and I loved his production style during the writing and we ended up using a lot of his original ideas in the final production.
-How much did they get to influence the song?
The production is very much the backbone of any song. I truly think it can make or break a song. The melody and lyrics were definitely heavily inspired by the vibe of the track!
-What role does Nashville play in your artistry?
I think Nashville has shaped me into a better songwriter and I’ve been able to use this improved lyricism in my pop songs.
-I know there’s a music video to follow; how was the filming process and experience behind the video?
I’m thankful I get to direct and edit the final product myself! I love to have my hands on all aspects of the creative process and have been hugely inspired by Taylor Swift and the large role she plays in creating her own music videos. The most challenging aspect is making sure everything runs smoothly the day-of. Since I’m an indie artist and the budget is small-scale, there’s a lot of DIY that goes into the process. Luckily, I have great friends who help out and I’ve been able to work with incredibly talented crews on set (shoutout to Jimmy Naples, Alex Beswick, and Tyler Chase).
-Does the new single mean we can expect even more new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes!! You can catch the next single next month!
-Any plans to hit the road?
Plans are in the works! Hopefully I’ll be able to announce soon!
-What else is happening next in Brooke Alexx’s world?
I just found out my song “Stole My Heart” (co written with Chelsea Balan and Matt Harris) was selected as a semifinalist in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC), which was super unexpected and cool! You may get to hear that song soon as well ☺
