Casinos make the ideal backdrop for any thrilling movie. High stakes, big money, sophisticated attire – it’s the perfect combination to add to the drama on screen. Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

This classic casino heist movie sees Danny Ocean, a gangster, assemble a group of eleven oddballs in an effort to steal money from three popular casinos in Las Vegas owned by his nemesis, Terry Benedict. The movies focus is on the planning and execution of simultaneously robbing the Bellagio, the Mirage, and the MGM Grand casinos in Vegas.

The 2001 version was a remake of a popular 1960 rat pack movie of the same name. With an all-star cast featuring Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Julia Roberts it proved to be a massive box office success which spawned two sequels.

Casino Royale (2006)

Jame Bond and casinos go hand in hand so it’s no surprise to see one feature as the title of the secret agent’s 2006 outing. The movie sees Bond, played for the first time by Daniel Craig, going on his first mission as a 00 agent after training but yet to earn his licence to kill.

The action focuses on a high stakes poker game at Casino Royale in Montenegro where James sets out to defeat Le Chiffre, a banker to some of the world’s most wanted terrorists.

Rain Man (1988)

This classic comedy-drama movie sees Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman as brothers who only discover each other exist once their father dies. Hoffman plays Raymond, an autistic savant who is left his father’s inheritance much to the annoyance of Charlie Babbitt played by Cruise.

The famous casino scene set in Vegas comes as Charlie finds himself $80,000 in debt and hatches a plan to win money at blackjack. He uses the mathematical genius of his autistic brother to win over $86,000 by counting cards before the casino cottons on to their scheme and asks them to leave.

The Cooler (2003)

This romantic drama sees Bernie (William H. Macy) as an extremely unlucky gambler who owes the Shangri-La casino over $100,000. Being so unlucky, he gets hired as a “cooler” to gamble next to high rollers in the hope that his bad luck will rub off on them. Bernie has soon almost paid off his debts but the mob boss Shelly (Alec Baldwin) isn’t going to let Bernie go so easily.

Casino (1995)

With an all-star cast featuring Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci, this Martin Scorsese directed movie should certainly be on your best casino films list. It’s a tale of greed, deception, money, power, and murder between two best friends, one of which is a casino executive, the other a mafia enforcer. They compete against each other over both a gambling empire and of course a beautiful woman. It doesn’t get much better than this for any casino movie fan.
