INTERVIEW: DC-based Afrofusion Artist Gogowé

Hi G, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Answer: Hi! I’ve been great. Excited to be on here.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Wanna Be Somebody”?

Answer: ‘Wanna Be Somebody’ is an infectious afro-fusion and highlife offering, which radiates a lot of positivity and energy. It’s playful, yet introspective — very reflective of my personality. And it captures my journey as an indie artiste from Lagos Nigeria to DC.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Answer: We live in a time where it’s easy to lose focus of your individual calling and you’re almost always comparing yourself to others. This song is inspired by just that. I want to lend my little voice towards contributing something positive to the world, and in this case, it is pursuing your purpose unapologetically.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Answer: For sure. I love visuals because it gives me a chance to share the full Gogowé package. In addition to the signing, I’m also a dancer, pianist and newbie trumpeter so it’s always great to be able to showcase those!

How was the recording and writing process?

Answer: The song started very organically as a freestyle in the studio. I was with the producer Bvybes – we were vibing and he was doing his thing on the beat. As usual, I asked him to play it stinking loud, spent a few minutes pacing around the studio, and then came back with the tune!

What role does DC play in your music?

Answer: A huge role. I’m a woman (she/her) born and raised in Lagos, moved to Atlanta for college and i’m now living in DC. I think this will always influence my perspective of the world, and in my art subconsciously.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Answer: For sure! Expect more music. I’ve been recording so much material and can’t wait to be able to share with the world.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Answer: I won’t share the date or title just yet 😉 But I’m shooting for this year!

What other aspects of social issues will you get to tackle on moving forward?

Answer: A wide range, quite honestly. But in thinking about the music I’ve been working on in recent times, i’d say Self-confidence and Feminism are major themes and I’ll continue to tackle those and more.

Any plans to hit the road?

Answer: YES! I love performing even more than recording.

What else is happening next in Gogowe’s world?

Answer: Self-growth. I’m obsessed with the idea of constant self improvement in all aspects of my life, but in this case, i’m talking musically. So expect more and incrementally better songs!
