How Protecting Your Eyes May Prevent Coronavirus

It was in December 2019 when the reports of a fresh type of coronavirus was found in Wuhan, China. While some coronaviruses affect just animals, others are also known to bring about damage to humans, too. This new type of coronavirus can cause bronchitis, common cold, kidney failure, pneumonia, and the severe kind can also lead to death.

Coronavirus and the Eye

Of the preventive measures that are being taken in order to keep us safe from the coronavirus, turns out that protecting your eyes is one of the most important things to take care of with regards to preventing the coronavirus from spreading and infecting you. It’s known that the Wuhan virus spreads mainly through sneezes and coughs, much like a flu virus.

Wang Guangfa, who is a respiratory specialist at Peking University, says that the reason he contracted the new coronavirus is because of being in close proximity with the patients admitted at China’s health clinics. His left eye then became inflamed. He then developed a fever along with mucus building up in this throat and nose, and was eventually diagnosed with coronavirus. Wang predicts that his left eye became infected as he didn’t have any protective eyewear on.

Long School of Medicine’s Dr. Jan Evans Patterson, who is a professor at the infectious diseases division, says that it’s possible that a scenario like Wang’s could indeed take place. She says that perhaps an infected individual’s respiratory droplets probably reached the eyes of Wang, or maybe some other mucus membrane. Therefore, it’s evident that protecting your eye is vital when it comes to taking precautions regarding coronavirus.

Products for Prevention

Los Angeles Optometrist, Dr. Elise Brsico of Hollywood Vision Center recommends two products that have the potential to protect your eyes from getting infected by coronavirus and also preventing other diseases.

  1. ClearColor Phantom Lenses: We all love dressing up for special occasions like Halloween, and that includes putting on funky and colorful contact lenses. However, it’s important to make sure that the ones we wear are safe, especially if diseases such as the coronavirus are plaguing the world. The ClearColor Phantom Lenses are created using a unique special invert padding technology, which makes them not only easy to put on, but also a safe product to use for your eyes.

  2. Scleral Contact Lenses: In case you have dry eyes, keratoconus, or irregular corneas, Scleral GP Lenses will be better suited for you to shield your eyes from diseases and infections. These lenses have a clear surface. They vault over the irregular cornea, and rest on the white surface of your eye, thereby giving you optimal comfort. They’re so light that you won’t even feel like you’re wearing lenses at all.

As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this is the seventh type of coronavirus that has been discovered to date.  Let’s do everything we can to prevent the further spread of coronavirus.
