INTERVIEW: Kevin Shin Talks (And Premieres) New Single “We Ride”

Singer/songwriter, Kevin Shin, is back with the release of his new single today, “We Ride” — the track is full of dynamic instrumentals and simple snappy lyrics fit for a joyride into the sunset. With a shadow of nostalgia to 90s hip-hop, Shin never fails to bring his versatility when it comes to bringing people together through lyrical hip-hop music.

“We Ride” dives in with a mesmerizing backbeat and a basic rhythmic flow that keeps you in a hip-hop trance. Lyrics such as “We ride into the Sunset,” “Take you to another level”, and “put the pedal to the medal,” gives freedom feel-good vibes.

Kevin Shin masterfully infuses his hip-hop culture and Asian background as seen before with his last hit single, “Hotel Tokyo” and popular album, “Evolution” back in 2018. “We Ride” is the second track off the upcoming EP highlighting that Kevin Shin’s urban melodies continue to make waves in the U.S. pop culture scene.

We get to sit with Shin to discuss more about the process behind this new single and what else is in stores!

Hi Kevin, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello everyone! I’ve been keeping busy and getting excited for the upcoming single. Thank you VENTS for having me.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “We Ride”?

“We Ride” is my second single for my upcoming EP. This record is probably my favorite, if not top two tracks from what I have planned. I always try to have some Eastern culture in all my music, and “We Ride” continues that trend. It was a blessing working on this record with my cousin and co-producer Moodin’, and two of the most amazing songwriters, Akil ‘Fresh’ King, Kyle ‘KO’ Owens, who I’m lucky to call brothers.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Moodin’ and I were on a super vibe when we first started producing this record. We were super into unique sounds that represented sounds of the East. Afterwards, getting in the studio with Fresh allowed the song to blossom with a chill, Western flow. KO helped add the final touches with amazing ideas.

How was the recording and writing process?

Writing process was super chill. Didn’t rush anything but really kept things with the flow. Recording was super fun and easy, just being in the studio with my engineer Ray Charles Brown Jr. and Moodin’. If it’s not fun then why do it, right?

What made you want to go for a slightly 90s direction with this song?

I’ve always been a 90s child. My favorite music is all from the golden era of hip-hop in the 90s. Whenever I create music, I think I’ve always been heavily influenced by all the music I grew up listening to.

How would you say your Korean background and upbringing has influence your writing and music as a whole?

I think my Korean background always gives me different perspectives on the music I write. I feel like perspective is everything in life. Being open minded to new things to try always gives me a sense of appreciation for all the things I still don’t know.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes, absolutely. So far, I’m pretty ready for the release of all my records and my upcoming EP. It’s been about a year since I started this project, and still in the process of getting the details right. I’m really excited for all my music to be released for everyone to enjoy. I’m putting  in a lot of time into perfecting each record, so I hope that it can be something relatable to everyone who listens.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I’m hoping to release the entire EP around mid-Summer. Besides that, I’ll be releasing a couple more singles leading up to it. All records already are titled, but I’mma keep it to myself till it releases.

Any plans to hit the road?

I’m actually on the road all the time. It’s as if I can’t stay in one place for more than a week. Recently I’ve been hitting different countries that I’ve never been to, to get inspired by all the different cultures out there.

What else is happening next in Kevin Shin’s world?

Focused on my music, and being happy.
