INTERVIEW: DEADFIRE

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi VENTS, Charlie here, we’ve been great, cheers. Really busy . Lots of organisation going into our EP launch day. With playing our Hometown HMV during the day then a launch party/gig at night . And filling our diary for the year.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Call From The Void”?

Call from the void is one of the tracks from our forthcoming EP. The call from the void is that strange feeling you can’t explain usually felt standing on a ledge or in front of traffic. The feeling of what would happen if…… it can manifest in many different ways or situations and like anything it can be interpreted in many ways. Anxiety, stress a test of your inner strength.  Either way it’s a concept that’s always interested me.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Not really like I said it’s just a concept I’ve always been intrigued by. My mind Belongs to the Devil was. And mary Jane was inspired by true love.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

To be honest the video is shit lol. We are currently working on 3 videos for each of our tracks on the ep first one is for My mind Belongs to the Devil (title track) that should be ready to release on the EP release date a proper concept video then we plan 2 others in the following weeks after. These videos will be better. Haha.

The single comes off your new EP My Mind Belongs To The Devil – what’s the story behind the title?

The title is one of the tracks My mind Belongs to the Devil.  A song about a time in my life where I was being and acting like someone that wasn’t me. Doing bad shit but knowing i was a better person than that. The wrong path is easy to go down and stay on. It’s hard to admit your wrong and step away. “There’s good in my heart but  My mind belongs to the Devil , there’s good in my soul but my mind belongs in hell”.

How was the recording and writing process?

Recording is always great. We are a tight unit  We eat, drink and shit together. We just get a shit load of booze and pizza and record some tunes. We jam/get pissed together weekly and write songs naturally its never forced and always as a band. Usually starts with a riff idea and goes from there  nothings precious.  If its shit it gets dumped lol.

What role does Scotland play in your music?

Scotland….. well all the songs are written in Scotland drinking Scottish lager lol but that’s about it. We love playing live and will play almost everywhere ( we once nearly played a crackden looking venue in Leipzig Germany before doing a bunk lol ) we’ve toured Europe twice now and played most cities in uk along the way.

How has Nirvana and Motorhead influenced your writing?

Nirvana and Motorhead are massive influences of mine (Charlie), Nirvana more when I was younger. The angst feeling of not fitting in. Not knowing my place. And motorhead now adays as all we wanna do is drink, party and play live gigs. We all have different influences from AC/DC to therapy? To Alice in chains and Sabbath but we all pull together to sound like Deadfire. We are often described as old school rock/metal with a stoner grunge tinge.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

I’ve written tones of lyrics and never used them. I write to vent. But usually I write lyrics at jam. Some are too close and some are sheer fantasy depends on my mood. I believe lyrics can tell a story or purvey an emotion. Everyone hears a song differently.

Any plans to hit the road?

We are constantly gigging.  And usually out of Aberdeen. We plan a uk tour for about august time and we have a wee Scottish run in April. Keep an eye on the socials for dates if there’s a stage, a crowd and a bar count us in.

What else is happening next in Deadfire’s world?

EP launch, video launches, gigs, festivals, interviews, radio play and some nice reviews hopefully
