Hi Lisa, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I am happy to say I’ve been really great!! I can feel my career lifting off in new ways and I am absolutely psyched!!! How are you?!
Can you talk to us more about your single “You Ain’t My Friend”?
Haha, what do you mean? Basically, we all have that certain someone in our lives that doesn’t understand friendship. Maybe it’s someone you work with who keeps asking you to go to their special bar for happy hour and you have no idea why. Maybe it’s that friend who was by your side for years but then started dating your boyfriend behind your back. Or just someone you don’t remember meeting, but they tell everyone you are the best of friends. So many situations….you ain’t my friend! Get your life together! For me, it was a woman in a show I did. I would dread going to work to see her and she would count the minutes until finally, we were together. Awkward to say the least.
Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?
Yes, being in a touring company means you are surrounded by the same people for however long your contract allows. Every day I was forced (lol) to see this “friend”. Every day she hurt my feelings, she attempted to make me feel less of a person than she was snd everyone knew it. Instead of yelling at her (because it’s rude to yell at someone bc you don’t like them) I wrote a song about her. It helped!!
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Absolutely. I am hoping to receive some help from my IndieGoGo campaign to be able to make the video I have in mind. Until then, I’ll release a smaller lyric video. I want everyone to really understand what I am saying in this song.
The single comes off your new album Surrender – what’s the story behind the title?
For me, in order for me to continue moving ahead successfully in this business meant I needed to surrender/let go of a lot of things, mostly control, to keep moving on up. I really believe if I didn’t slow down and let go you wouldn’t be hearing these songs.
How were the recording and writing process?
So much fun. I have an incredible writing partner. We allow ourselves to take chances and open our minds up to run with each other’s ideas. I trust him and he trusts me. It’s so fun to write together and record in his studio.
What was it like to work with Frank Cogliano and how did that relationship develop?
Frank is a shy one. I love how he plays guitar. He won’t say much but wow does he express himself through his music. We both hear the same things musically. Any idea he would play on guitar/piano/strings would melt my heart, chill my spine or force me to sing with him. We respect each other so we don’t mind fighting to be heard, ending sessions early bc we disagree or one person forcing the other to get over themselves so we can keep the creativity flowing. In a way, he’s my soulmate. In other ways, I wanna strangle him!
How much did he get to influence the album?
He heavily influenced this album. He’s playing all the instruments, he’s holding my hand through production and he started a few of these tracks himself. Sometimes I’ll give him a word or lyric idea and moments ltr he’ll write a melody. Sometimes he’ll write out what could be a verse and a hook, then I’ll take that idea and run with it. We are one lol!
How did you go on blending and balancing all your different influences together?
We love a lot of the same music. We listened to a lot of the same artist growing up so there was never a disconnect.
What role does NYC play in your music?
NYC is the star of my life! I left musical theater in the Midwest and started fresh in NYC. Terrifying. I met Frank in NYC. I became a recording artist in NYC. I was homeless in NYC. I booked my first TV appearance…..etc SO many incredible opportunities came to me while living here that created an artist. I love this city!
What aspect of heartbreak and what temptations did you get to explore on this record?
Sadly, I’ve been through a ton of heartbreak. Yes, by boys who I thought loved me but also by this business. Watching my friends pass me by and excel is heartbreaking. Hearing directors, managers, agents, producers, celebrities, writers, “friends”, singers all gaslighting me to be what they think is “great for me” all the while never listening to me broke my spirit. Believing I’m not enough and having no one to lift me up broke me down. The temptation lies at the bar. Drink away your problems cause I’m not and will never be good enough. Every day I had to get up and face NYC again and again until she FINALLY understood I’m not leaving her alone until she respects me and gives me what I want.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
The inspiration came from within. I sound lame but it’s true! This album is one gigantic diary entry.
Any plans to hit the road?
I think all I want is to tour the world performing my music. Can you just imagine?!?! Me screaming out lyrics I wrote to music I wrote with a band I chose and a team filled with the greatest energy of them all….don’t u wanna be apart of the magic?! I can’t wait. Just need to drop my album first!
What else is happening next in Lisa Ramey’s world?
Right now I’m full-on in NY fashion week. I love fashion. In another life, I must have been a designer. Definitely not this life. Besides that, I am getting ready for my album release party/show. Its been a long time coming for my city to hear this album. It’s going to be a huge night with quite the guest list so I’ve got a lot of planning to do! Are you coming?! You should be coming!
