8 things to know before visiting London

London is a powerful and historic city that was at one time part of one of the largest empires ever. The city still drips with culture while also finding its place in the modern world. If you’re lucky enough to visit the city, you want to get the most out of your experience. Here are 10 things you should know before travelling to London.

Get Used to the Accents

Well, we’re not only talking about the accents. Many of the words will sound different to you. In order to communicate, you need to learn the lingo. For example, “loo” means bathroom. “Biscuit” refers to both a cookie and a biscuit. Using the right words can alleviate any miscommunications. As a guest, learn as much as possible and use the right phrasing.

It’s Crowded

If you’ve just arrived in London and are waiting until you check in your Airbnb (or catching a late flight after you’ve checked out), don’t let bags stop you from discovering the city. Thankfully, there are many services such as Stasher, offering luggage storage in the center of London.

Food is Significantly Different

Food will be a little different than you’re used to. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s bad. Naturally, you’ll have to try the fish and trips when you get to a pub. You can also try the classic snack of beans on toast. However, there is plenty of world-class dining, too. Research before you pick where you eat to ensure you have the best dining experience ever. Also, keep an open mind.

Most Museums are Free

It seems like every museum in America is extraordinarily expensive. In London, however, most of the museums are actually free. The Tate Modern Museum, the British Museum, and the Natural History Museum are all free. The Tower of London costs money to see, but it’s worth it.

The Underground is Extremely Effective

London has one of the best subway systems in the world. During the day, you don’t even have to check the times of the trains. You won’t have to wait more than five minutes for a train to arrive. The different lines take you to different places, so study the map to ensure you’re on the correct train.

Develop a Good Understanding of the Exchange Rate

Learn the exchange rate. You should have an understanding of how much items cost in your own currency. This will prevent you from making some poor financial decisions. If it helps, you should keep your exchange calculator app handy on your cell phone. Exchange rates change with time. You should be checking the exchange rate regularly to understand the trends.

Cars Drive on the Other Side of the Road

If you plan to drive while in town, you may find it difficult to adjust. People drive in the right seat in the front of the car. They also drive on the left side of the road. Do not drive if you do not feel comfortable. It’s best to remain as safe as possible.

Healthcare is Free

As with 22 out of the 23 industrialized nations, England has free healthcare. This isn’t only for residents. Travelers get free health care. This means that if you are injured or get sick while in the area, you will get the care you need without going broke.

Emergency Number is Different

Most of us are familiar with “9-1-1” as the emergency hotline. In London, you reach the emergency hotline by dialing “9-9-9”. If you dial “9-1-1-“, you won’t get very far.
