INTERVIEW: Crown Lands

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Spit It Out”?

Spit it out is a song that talks about the lack of communication between two people, and the toxic cycle of decay it can instil if you don’t get out what’s eating away at you inside.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It was the first song of the record that we wrote after touring with Jack White last year. Musically, we were really inspired by the swagger he injects into his music and we tried to capture what that feeling meant to us with this song.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

We worked with Travis Shinn. He’s a fantastic photographer and director. We love him and his unique visual flair. He actually built a few custom kaleidoscopes out of wood & mirrors for the shoot. We love his old-school meets new-school approach. It matches the way we approach music.

How was the recording and writing process?

We ate a lot of Thai food. We tracked the guitar and drums live off the floor and captured the performance, overdubbing vocals and keyboards. We added a couple  splashes of effect-laded guitars here-and-there, but a lot of the final version of the song is true to what we tracked in the Live Room at RCA Studio A.

What was it like to work with Dave Cobb and how did that relationship develop?

Interest to work with him was sparked by reading about how he embraces an old-school recording approach in the studio. We love his work, especially with Rival Sons – we heard many great things about Dave when we toured with them.

We love his style, and when we met him in Nashville prior to recording we clicked instantly, setting the tone for how the recording process would unfold.  We would often come in with demos and he would listen to one each morning; carefully selective of the sequence in which we worked on the songs that would become record cuts. We had a blast working with him on this record!

How much did he get to influence the song?

Dave was keen on capturing the spirit of the song early on. He focused on getting our energy as high as possible so we ended up using the first or second take each time. That way it feels fresh with a healthy dose of danger – like a train about to go off the rails.

What role does Canada play in your music?

Canada has a very complicated and dark relationship with Indigenous Peoples and our music sets out to bring light to that. A song on the new album is called End of the Road and it is about Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls.

Also, Canada is cold most the year so we stay inside all the time and play music.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along? Any tentative release date or title in mind? Any plans to hit the road?

Yes! We have our debut Full Length LP ready to press on vinyl in time for our headliner show in Toronto. It will be self-titled like all of our favourite debut albums.

What else is happening next in Crown Lands’ world

We’re currently recording an acoustic EP, writing LP 2 and getting ready for our UK/EU tour with Larkin Poe. We have a few more videos to finish as well. A slow and mellow year indeed!
