INTERVIEW: 2019 Open Mic UK Winner Natalie Lindi

Hi Natalie, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hiya! I’ve been great. Really excited to be interviewing with you. Thank you for having me.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Peace”?

Peace is my debut single. I wrote and arranged it myself, it was released a couple of years ago. It’s a heartfelt, soulful song about needing to escape an inner struggle.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

There wasn’t one isolated event which made me write it, the song rather reflects a tough period of my life. I was feeling low, overwhelmed, and like there was no way of escaping those difficult emotions. In the midst of the loneliness I felt, I sat on the edge of my bed, played the guitar and started writing down everything I felt. Outside my window there’s a tall eucalyptus tree which inspired the opening lyric “black tree silhouette, warm bed to rest my head”. For a brief moment, singing and writing the song gave me a sense of relief. I hope that it does the same for anyone that listens to it.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Possibly in the future, but right now I’m focusing on recording new music. I have grown a lot since Peace and want people to hear that!

How was the recording and writing process?

The song came together really quickly, I wrote the it in one night. But the recording process was time consuming! It took a while to find the right person to mix and master the track. I learnt a lot through working with different people, so even though it took ages I’m glad I got learning experience from the process.

What did you learn from your experience on Open Mic that you are putting in action on your career now?

Open Mic UK competition was such a fantastic experience. I connected with so many musicians, and made some really useful contacts. At every round of the competition we received feedback from the judges, so I learnt about specific ways to improve as a performer. I also learnt to make the most out of the opportunities that come my way.

What role does the UK play in your music?

A lot of my favourite artists are from the UK; Lianne La Havas, Tom Misch, Corinne Bailey Rae and Izzy Bizu to name a few. Seeing them do well and expand outside the UK makes me believe it’s possible for me to do the same.

Also living in London means I’m in the middle of a diverse melting pot of different religions, cultures and ethnicities. Each culture brings their own musical style with them so I’m constantly inspired by different people. Even though London is go,go,go and the 9am rush hour tube isn’t exactly fun… the music scene here is thriving. Many of my friends have had to travel from abroad to be part of it, so I’m lucky to have been born here.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes you can expect new material! Part of the winning prize on Open Mic UK is to record my music in a top notch studio. So I’m very excited for that.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

No release dates yet, but keep your eyes peeled! Follow my instagram @natalie_lindi to stay updated. I’ll be posting about my progress in the studio and release dates to come.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes! But not at the moment, the recording comes first. I will be hitting the road to promote the new music once it’s ready.

What else is happening next in Natalie Lindi’s world?

I am one of the opening acts for Bee Bakare’s album launch on the 17th March. She is a singer-songwriter with a phenomenal voice and inspiring work ethic; a very accomplished lady. She actually won Open Mic UK too a few years back!

Other than that, I’ll be gigging in and around London and working on new music, come to a show if you’re around!
