Baby Wardrobe Checklist: Essentials for Your Newborn’s Closet

Baby on the way?

There’s a ton of things that need to be done. From setting up the nursery to picking out clothes, buying the baby must-haves will definitely keep you very busy.

Wondering how to make the right decision about baby essentials? It can be tough to know exactly what to do since there are so many choices out there.

It’s time to sort through the cuteness with this baby wardrobe essentials checklist.

Things to Consider

Laundry and baby clothing sizes are some important things to consider when choosing a baby wardrobe. The frequency of your laundry will play a part in deciding how many items of clothing you’ll need to have ready for your newborn.

With a newborn on hand, you’ll probably only think about getting newborn sizes but your baby will outgrow these quickly. So consider picking a few newborn items as well as some 0-3 months sizes.

You can even shop online at a store like One Kind Clothing Co. There’s no need to search every mall for the right baby clothes.

What’s recommended?

This breakdown includes a few bodysuits, some pants, a few hats, several pairs of socks, a couple of swaddles, a few sleepers, footies, and gowns.

Here’s the exact amount for each item that should be on your checklist

Baby clothes basics:

  • 7 bodysuits or rompers

  • 3-5 pants

  • 2 hats

  • 5 pairs of socks

  • 2-3 swaddles

  • 4 sleepers or gowns

For winter add:

  • 1 coat or bunting sack

  • 2 booties

  • 2 additional pairs of socks

  • blankets

For summer add:

  • 2 lightweight blankets

  • 1 summer hat

Throw in a sweater or two, a few pairs of mittens, a winter coat and your baby is ready to go out on the town.

The Specifics

For bodysuits and rompers be sure to include a few long-sleeved ones especially for winter. Around the first two weeks after birth, babies can wear a few T-shirts until their umbilical cords fall off.

Beanies are the hats that are recommended for the early months. A fleece hat is also nice for winter.

A blanket can come in handy for swaddling too. Sleepers should be lightweight and shouldn’t bunch or shift.

Mittens aren’t only for winter. Scratch mittens are great for preventing newborns from scratching themselves.

Special Outfits

With a newborn, there will definitely be a few occasions to dress up or take some adorable photos.

So it’s a good idea to have at least two nice outfits for your bundle of joy.

The Right Choice

This checklist only gives a general idea of the must-have pieces for your baby wardrobe. Your lifestyle, budget, and taste will form a part of your final choice as well.

Climates and special occasions will also determine what you choose. Remember to add a piece or two just for fun occasions such as for photoshoots.

If you follow these tips, your baby will look cute and have adequate clothing no matter what the season.
