7 Fun Facts About Airplanes That Will Surprise You

There are so many fun facts about airplanes out there that we wanted to share our top seven with you!

Whether it’s safety or just cool things you never knew, it’s always fun to see what’s behind the curtain with the fastest form of transportation.

1. Very Few People Have Traveled by Airplane

One of the more interesting statistics that has come out is that only 5% of the world’s population has ever been on an airplane. This, of course, includes the entire world, so don’t be surprised that people in North America fly extremely often.

2. How Safe is the Bathroom?

On airplanes in order to maintain safety, the bathroom door can typically be unlocked from the outside.

This would allow flight attendants quick access to a locked bathroom if there was an emergency!

3. Certain Seats are Safer

We all love a good safety fact. According to statistics from airlines, it can be up to 40% safer to sit in the back of the plane than in the front.

Who knew the cheap seats could actually be better if something goes wrong?

4. Cutting Down on Bills is Easier than You’d Think

Sorry, no quick tips for cheap flights here, but the airlines found a great way to reduce the cost to their business back in the 1980s!

American Airlines found that when they removed a single olive from their in-flight meals, it saved them over $40,000 per year.

5. Dimming the Lights Isn’t Just So You Can Sleep

It’s great to imagine that airlines think of you when it’s late at night and you’re on a flight. A bit of restful sleep goes a long way, but dimming the lights isn’t just so you can make the time fly by.

This is actually so that in the event of a nighttime accident, the passengers would be prepared for the sudden light adjustment.

6. You Can Fly On One Engine

Twin-engine airplanes, like the commercial airplanes most people fly on, can run on one engine for up to five hours depending on the model.

Most large airplanes have at least two engines for added safety!

7. The Famous Black Box Isn’t Black

A black box is what is used to record information in case an airplane has an unfortunate accident. It records pilot conversations, airplane statistics, and location.

It is always called a black box, but it’s actually a nice bright international orange! This is so that you can find it in the rubble in the event of a plane crash.
