How would you classify your music?
Instrumental Witch Rock.
Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?
This could change by tomorrow, but 5 that immediately come to mind are:
What do you want fans to take from your music?
Creating my latest release was like ongoing spiritual therapy for me personally. I hope it connects with people on any level at all. Maybe gym music, rocking in the car… in the end, it’s just rock and roll!
How’s the music scene in your locale?
There is a ton of great talent around Ottawa, and plenty of extraordinary touring artists that I’ve seen come through on the club level. There’s always work to be done to improve the local scene, but I feel like it’s starting to flourish…
What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?
I’ve seen SO many mind-blowing performances, but I always go back to Alice Cooper being my favorite. He always has a killer band, awesome theatrics, and a full night of hit songs. All of the elements are there!
Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?
I’m probably too close to the music to be truly objective, and my answer could change by next week… but right now I’m really digging the song “Was it something I said?”
It’s just SO weird and different from everything else, and something stylistically I’ve wanted to explore for years. It was also the last song recorded for the album, so there’s a positive and kind of funky, celebratory vibe to it.
How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?
There’s never really a dull moment… I did a run with a local theatre group performing the music of Queen for the production of We Will Rock You, which was a challenge; both as a guitar player, but also playing the songs live in the context of a theatrical play. I worked really hard at wearing practically all the hats in the context of creating my debut solo instrumental album, and also figuring out how to produce music videos to go along with the songs. Ultimately, the way I evolved the most is in my outlook. I can’t always make things perfect, but I can always get things done!
If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?
Jim Steinman or Prince.
What’s next for you?
I’m going to make more incredibly irresponsible music videos to go along with the other songs on “Lifting the Curse”.
I have recorded a bunch of solos for a brand new Famous Underground album (Toronto) so I really hope that gets released soon too!
As for live performance, I have more musical theatre in my future, Creeping Beauty acoustic gigs lined up for the summer, and I’m working on a live show for my instrumental project as well!
I have already started writing and demoing songs for the next Darren Michael Boyd album.
