In 2018, 21,917 U.S students participated in the High School Clay Target League. As the sport grows in popularity among all demographics, there’s an increasing demand for clay throwers.
While most clay shooting clubs have high-level equipment, not all people want to venture over to a club to shoot. You can save money and time by having a clay target thrower of your own. But before you rush to make a purchase, you should do your research. Consider all of the following details to ensure that you pick the right clay pigeon launcher for your needs.
The Recycle Speed
It’s crucial that you choose a clay target thrower that has the speed you want. For instance, some people prefer to do quick draw shooting. In this case, you would want a thrower that has a fast recycle speed. The speed would also be important if you plan on shooting doubles.
For general shooting, you should look for a recycle speed of at least 1.75 seconds. However, you may not need to get anything faster than 2.5 seconds.
Whether or Not It Is Portable
If your clay pigeon launcher is for at-home use, you should look into getting one that is somewhat portable. Even the most portable traps are heavy, as they typically range between 45 and 125 pounds. But certain features, like wheels, make launchers easier to move.
When your thrower has wheels, you have the ability to easily move it from one place to another. You’re not forced to keep it in the same place on the range and you can limit damage to your thrower by moving it to storage when it’s not in use.
How You Control the Clay Target Thrower
Although most clay throwers have wired foot pedals for control, some have the option for a wireless control. Another option for control is in regards to the launch angle. While some throwers only have a few set options for angles, others have the ability for infinite adjustment.
Before you choose your thrower, consider how much flexibility you want. Is it worth paying more for a wireless control or more angle options? The answer depends on your personal preference.
Which Type of Shooting You Prefer
Of course, one of the details you should think about is the type of shooting you like to do. If ATA is your sport of choice, you should get an oscillating machine that mimics the traps used in ATA tournaments.
Others prefer skeet shooting. In this instance, you would want a skeet launcher that has two houses. You could go the more traditional route and get a standard sporting launcher, or challenge yourself with a wobble trap that goes up and down as well as side to side.
The Quality of the Product
Regardless of how often you plan to use your clay target thrower, the quality of the product matters. There’s nothing more frustrating than spending good money on a clay target thrower only to have it malfunction.
