Hi KOOLKID, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you for having me! I’ve been great, working hard in the studio writing & recording and now finally getting the chance to share my music with the world. Nothing feels better.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “2 SOON”?

My debut single ‘2 SOON’ means a lot to me. It’s one of those songs that when I wrote it, I knew it had to be released. It’s one of the more chilled songs I have which I felt was a perfect debut. It tells a story which I’m sure a lot of people will be able to connect with in one way or another.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I wrote the song about a past relationship. One which I knew wasn’t working out the way we had both intended. It felt lonely & one sided but I didn’t want to say anything ‘2 soon’ because I had this feeling of what if it gets better. Not wanting to say how you feel because you are scared of being more alone and wasting what could possibly turn out good.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We just released the lyric video for 2 SOON, which is available now on YouTube. I just got back from filming the music video to my follow up single ‘Feelings’ which comes out 6th February. I’m really excited for the world to hear and see the music video. We filmed it in my home country, Scotland. Way up in the mountains in the freezing cold. The pain was worth it. I’m so excited to release it.

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process was a weird one. I feel like sometimes when I’m writing, if I’m in a certain zone, the song seems to write itself. Thinking back on the relationship I mentioned, the words are already there for me, it’s just a matter of arranging them and finding the right melodies to fit what I’m trying to say. Recording this one felt right. Coming from a songwriter background, being in the studio and hearing the vocals for the first time, you just know when it’s right. I want my music to tell a story and to really connect with the listeners.

What role does Glasgow play in your music?

Glasgow is where it all began for me. From playing music on the streets when I was 15 to playing small venues all over the city. It really gave my that first look into what I wanted to do with my life. It will always have a strong place in my heart.

With the recognition your songwriting has gained – did you feel any pressure while putting on this song or rather the opposite?

Writing for BTS, the biggest group in the world right now, gave me a huge amount of confidence in my own ability. Seeing the song, we wrote together performed all over the world to thousands of people each night, really opened my eyes to the possibilities of releasing my own music. I don’t feel pressure because If I feel a strong connection to a song, I want to put it out no matter what. If it’s for myself, or another artist, as long as the song finds a home in someone, I’m happy.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

YES! Lots of new music is on the way. As I mentioned in one of the previous questions, my next single ‘Feelings’ is out on the 6th February. I’m super excited to get this out to the world. I’m also hoping to get back on the road this year.

Performing has always been a big part of my life and getting back on stage will be a truly amazing feeling.

What else is happening next in KOOLKID’s world?

I am currently working hard on new material; I just want to focus on releasing really good music that I love. That is the goal for 2020, release really good music & lots of it! Right now, I’m also working with the BTS boys on their new album, which I am really excited about!
