INTERVIEW: Kaci Brookz

Vents Magazine recently spoke with UK-based rising hip hop artist Kaci Brookz. At just 16 years old, he has already performed in one of the most prestigious London music venues, and is well on his way to achieving great things in 2020!

His new single Steppin will be released on 31st Jan – keep your eyes and ears peeled for the drop this Friday!

Ahead of the release we spoke to Kaci about his career so far and his latest release. Check out the full interview below.

Hi Kaci – great to meet you, what have you been up to this month?

Hey, great to chat with you. This month and the last few months really, have been crazy. I’ve been basically living in the studio creating new songs and testing myself and my creativity. At the same time, I’ve been recovering from knee surgery which I had about a month and a half ago now. So yes, it’s all a bit mad at the moment but I love it, why stay still when you could be moving.

Tell us about the process of making your new single Steppin?

Steppin was created at a time where I was experimenting with my sound. In my head, I knew that I was evolving, and I was already thinking about the bigger project that I had in mind. This was definitely an opportunity to see how I could grow. So this song, was really my first experiment with blending genres. I wrote and recorded the song in the same day and it all came quite easily, I think this is because the song was just so right for me at that time. it went just as I had planned. Me and the producer (Jojo F) had been going crazy creatively and it just didn’t stop and so the melody and lyrics kind of just rolled-off-the-tongue in the booth.

What would you consider to be your biggest achievement so far?

Of course, this whole journey so far has been an achievement for me really, every performance I do, every song I create it’s all just steady improvement and to me that is an achievement in itself. However, although I can’t say too much on this subject, the project I have been working on is the real achievement because I entered this music scene having never written a song, never been in a studio, all of this was new to me. So the fact that I have been able to create this project and feel like it is something that I can proud of, is a biggest achievement for me.

What are your goals for 2020?

My goals for this year are not too specific, apart from the fact that I want my music to do well and for people to understand the direction that I am going in as an artist. For me, it’s all about my development in all forms, my music, my popularity, my creativity, the people I’m working with, the people I meet. All of that kind of stuff will tell me how successful my year has been.

What track do you have on repeat at the moment?

The list is genuinely endless but ‘SUGAR’ by BROCKHAMPTON. Yeah, I’ve probably listened to that song since I found out about it, the hook is just crazy.

Do perform any covers in your live set?

Yes…love some of the old RnB stuff from the 90’s and 00’s. Sometimes, I drop some of my own lyrics in as well, to give it a different spin.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

Erm… I was in the KFC Christmas advert in 2013, I doubt you would even recognize me though, I was a little baby 🙂

What has been your performance you’ve done so far?

My gig at O2 Islington was probably one of my strongest and most enjoyable performances because it was a gig that was at a well known venue, my set went off! And also, despite the distance my friends and family still made it and it was just a good experience for me…it showed me what this could actually become and reminded me why I love it so much.

What are you most excited for this year?

I’m excited by the fact that I’ve got so much stuff in my locker that I’m just waiting to show the world. It sounds cliche, but I genuinely think I’ve got some real stuff that people haven’t heard before in the UK. I guess I’m just excited to see how people react to my stuff.
