Lyrically, the single speaks the obstacles she has had to overcome because of her multi-cultural background, being both Algerian and English. “I wrote this song in an attempt to unify us by mixing English and Arabic, and to ask them to accept me and love me as I am,” Lolo explains.
Speaking on the video, Lolo continues:
“This is a story I’ve needed to tell my whole life. I’m so grateful that I was able to travel to North Africa and work with an amazing director and crew to create this video exactly as I saw it in my mind.”
Director, Emilie Badenhorst describes the creative process:
“I would describe the process of creating “Desert Rose” with Lolo as an honest, vulnerable and sensitive journey. Working with Lolo, she shared a sense of willingness and subtlety that goes beyond any creator’s expectations. It was crucial that we told Lolo’s story respectfully and intentionally. Therefore when approaching every moment in this video it was important to have a conscious and honest discussion with every person involved. Not only to create a genuine understanding but also to allow for a relevant and creative contribution from every individual who helped us tell Lolo’s story.”
