INTERVIEW: Progressive Metal band Gus McArthur

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi, thanks for having us! We have been great, thank you! A lot of nights creating new music, but that’s how we like it.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Both Eyes Closed”?

Definitely! “Both Eyes Closed” is a follow up song to our 2019 release “All I See”. Even though the two are not directly linked by the story, they very much live in the same world or realm. “Both Eyes Closed” is about the effects social media can have on a person’s mind. How it can drive someone to feel a sense of hopelessness and a disconnect from reality. The song is sung from the point of view of someone who has taken their own life because of these pressures social media has caused, while also feeling apologetic to those who love them.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

We would say many events inspired us to write this song, some directly and some indirectly. The Mental health crisis amongst young women and men globally is becoming more prevalent in recent years. Some of our idols growing up fought this battle and unfortunately succumbed, leaving us to wonder how much technology or social media has exacerbated these feelings as well as depression. Sorry to be dark, it’s not our goal to dwell on the morbidity, but rather bring light and hope to those who feel left behind.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Absolutely, not to give too much away, but we have something pretty amazing in the works, I guess you will just have to wait and see. We aren’t going to wait too long to release more snippets and details, but we want the music to stand alone, before we release any visuals.

How was the recording and writing process?

To be honest, the best we have to date! We linked up with some amazing artists and producers to make this transmission from Gus the most iconic sounding yet. Daniel Martin produced, engineered and mixed the entire song, it was truly amazing to watch him learn and he taught us a lot! We recorded at an awesome new studio called Cali.co based in Temecula, Ca. really cool vibes and just an awesome space to record. We utilized professional hip hop producer DJ Zole for production of a lot of the synths that you hear throughout the song. Last, but not least we worked the incredible Maor Appelbaum to master the entire song. ” Mastered by Maor Appelbaum at Maor Appelbaum Mastering – California – U.S.A “

What made you want to dive into the dark aspect of social media?

Social media grew more quickly than the internet itself, it has connected the world and each person in it expanding our understanding of the universe we live in. It’s easy to talk about all the good and the benefits, but it becomes harder to address the lack of humanity in this man made technology. It seems the necessity of social media in everyday life could also be the most corrosive. It’s a very interesting topic to discuss and often not one openly shared.

How did you get to balance the darkness with much uplifting message?

We always try to incorporate something unique and different in each song we make. There must be a light if there is a dark, yin and yang, darkside or the force. Hope is message that is universal, Gus McArthur is the voice of forgotten, the champion of the underdog.

You are also known for playing with both classic and modern metal as well as hip hop – how do you go on balancing these influences together?

It actually comes quite natural to us. We are brothers and have been creating music together for a very long time, not to say its easy, thrash metal and underground hip hop may sound like a disaster, but we have evolved since our original transmissions.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

You can always expect new material from Gus, it’s going great. 2020 is going to mark a momentous arrival of Gus McArthur and his music!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

No, but the chapters Of Gus McArthur will always be revealed in time, his signals or transmissions take time to be decoded by the us his voice.

Any plans to hit the road?

At the moment recording new transmissions from Gus are the most important, but who knows, we battle for Wacken this year so maybe Germany.

What else is happening next in Gus McArthur’s world?

We will be recording, definitely on youtube making content constantly and of course we Battle for Wacken Germany March 6th. We are excited to Battle for Wacken Metal festival!
