The Truth About Vaping: Why You Should Make the Switch from Cigarettes

It’s no surprise nearly two-thirds of the Americans who smoke want to quit. Smoking can be expensive and has been linked to many diseases.

Smoking doesn’t only affect smokers but affects those around them such as family. If you want to quit smoking or you are looking for a safer alternative then you’ll have given some consideration to ‘vaping.’ Is vaping the same as smoking?

Vaping – Is It the Same as Smoking?

Technically speaking no. The smoke from a cigarette is the by-product of burning a cigarette that contains nicotine which is then inhaled into the body.

As the fluid heats up, it begins to evaporate into a vapor that is inhaled by the user. The content of the vapor does contain nicotine, so in this sense it’s similar to smoking in that nicotine still enters the body.

Vaping – Is It as Harmful as Smoking?

That is the big question! Public Health England has published a landmark review which estimates that vaping is 95 percent less harmful. This report further observes that the general public isn’t aware of this.

Based on their reasoning, more people should be made aware of vaping as a safer alternative. Not only that but they reason that vaping could be a useful stepping stone or strategy in quitting smoking.

All of this begs the question as to why smoking is so much more harmful than vaping. The answer is related to the burning process associated with cigarettes. Apart from nicotine, this process produces harmful/toxic chemicals that enter the body.

Even though this landmark review is promising, it’s important to be balanced about the risk of inhaling any substance. There have been reports of deaths and lung injuries associated with vaping. It’s reasonable to say that vaping may be safer than smoking but it’s unwise to say it’s ‘safe.’

Electric Can Be Controlled

Smoking is a basic mechanism of burning and so it’s not easy to control the process. However, electric cigarettes or vapes allow you to have more control over the process.

For example, you can be more choosy about the vape fluid or eliquid. Some fluids contain more nicotine than others. The important thing is to be well informed about the ingredients in whatever fluid you choose to vape.

It will benefit you to spend some time to learn about eliquids.

Not only can you control what liquid you vape but you can control the ‘vaping’ process by reducing the electrical voltage. This will affect the degree of nicotine you consume.

Some may consider this advantageous when looking to wean off nicotine to lower levels. Of course, the opposite is true. If you want to, you can increase the voltage and this will give you a bigger ‘hit’ of nicotine.

Vaping is Still Addictive

There are advantages to your health in switching from smoking to vaping. However, don’t get confused, vaping is still addictive.

The bottom line is that vaping still contains nicotine and some say this is as addictive as cocaine or other hard drugs. If you want to use vaping as a means to eventually quit smoking it’ll be worth seeking advice from a cessation program.

You’ll need to consider your personality type and whether this approach will work for you. Vaping will give you more control but that doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be able to quit.

If you are a young person and do not smoke already but are curious about vaping, remember, it is still addictive and can be harmful to your health. Far better to not smoke or vape.

Truth About Vaping and Passive Smoking

This is an area of major concern for most smokers. It’s one thing to exercise your right and free choice to smoke but it’s another to do that while knowing you are potentially harming others.

Passive smoking is facilitated by the spread of secondhand smoke which is then consumed by others nearby. Vaping by definition doesn’t rely on smoke as a transport medium.

Based on the limited available evidence, it seems that secondhand vapor contains a fraction of nicotine when compared with smoking. This quantity is considered by many as negligible.

There is ongoing research, so time will tell. Yet, for now, vaping is a far more considerate alternative. That is an important social consideration.

Longterm Effects of Vaping

Vaping is so relatively new that the real health issues or longterm effects of vaping aren’t known. Early data makes some connection between vaping and lung damage as well as heart disease, although these links aren’t clear.

As more research is needed, you can be sure that vaping will continue to catch the attention of the health community as well as academics in the public health industry.
