You probably would give the person you love the world if you could. Unfortunately, that’s a bit over budget. Whether you have a birthday coming up, an anniversary, you’re getting ready for Valentine’s day or you just like to keep warm during the rest of the winter months by crafting romantic presents to express how you feel, there’s always new ways to make someone feel special, appreciated and cared for without having to rely on your credit card.
In the end, that’s not really what love is all about.
Lovey-Dovey Fortune Cookies
The first idea is to bake your own fortune cookies which isn’t that hard to figure out with the amazing powers the internet has bestowed upon us. You can write your own little messages which can be classics like “I love you!”, poetic compliments such as ”Your smile is like a spell that sooths all my worries”, cheesy pick-up lines to make them laugh or simply things that remind them of important moments in your relationship.
You can dip them in dark and white chocolate and add some sprinkles that absolutely have to contain the color pink. After they’ve cooled off you can just put them in a heart shaped box which you decorate with a nice bow and curling ribbon.
DIY Heart Shaped Bath Bombs
Who doesn’t like to come home after a tiring day at work and have their SO draw them a nice, relaxing bath, listen to some soft music and drink a glass of good wine? You can do all that and make it extra special by making a mason jar of bath bombs yourself, using their favorite scents of course.
You’ll need the following supplies:
- Silicone heart mold
- Mesh strainer
- Plastic gloves
- Spray bottle
- Baking soda
- Citric acid – you can find products made especially for bath bombs
- Fine Epsom salts – if you can’t fine Epsom salts you can just grind them
- Unscented witch hazel toner
- Essential oils such as vanilla, jasmine or sandalwood
First thing you’ll want to do is place the mesh strainer over a large bowl. You pour one cup from the baking soda, half a cup of citric acid and a quarter cup of the Epson salts. Now you sift everything into the bowl. Make sure there are no lumps.
Next step is to slowly add some of the essential oils to the mixture. Don’t overdo it though. About half a spoon should be sufficient but it depends which ones you used. You can add a little bit of food coloring as well if you want to make them pink – not too much, a drop or two. After you put your gloves on you can mix everything until the oils and food coloring are evenly distributed.
To make the mixture stick together you’ll have to start adding the witch hazel one spritz at a time. It will take around eight to ten spritzes to reach the desired consistency. It should stick together when you squeeze it.
It’s time to pack the damp mixture into the heart shaped molds. You should get about 5 or 6 bath bombs since it has to be fitted tightly into each mold. Now you can let is dry overnight and the next day the bath bombs should be hard. You can wrap them up in some plastic wrap to keep any moisture out and put them in an opaque mason jar.
You could also make them a special playlist to listen to while they’re in the bath. This works especially well is you find it difficult to express your feelings verbally, you just let the lyrics do the talking for you.
This is a great way of reminding them of all the special moments in your relationship so far. You can get a sketchbook for artists because it has hard covers and thicker pages, preferably with a spiral. Whatever size you like.
You can add pictures that remind you of important landmarks in you love story and write how these memories make you feel, how you feel about them now or whatever else you want to say to them that goes with the romantic theme of the present.
We recommend you first write them in pencil and go over it with a pen so the handwriting looks nice and you don’t have to worry about getting so overwhelmed with emotion that you make spelling mistakes.
You can add poems, lyrics from songs you both like or that remind you of him or her and on the last few pages you can add pictures of plans for the future such as places you’d like to visit together.
Stencil Wood Sign
Another romantic idea is to make them a stencil wood sign on which you can write something like “Home Is Wherever I’m With You” and some little hearts. If you’re very crafty and talented you can try something more complex like turning a portrait photo of them into a stencil using a photo editor and going with that instead.
You can get wooden boards of various sizes. Then you need to sand it and paint it. If you want to give it that vintage look you can use different shades of paint and go over them with some sand paper. You apply one thin layer, wait for it to dry, go over it with some sand paper. Another thin layer and sand paper again until you get the desired result.
In order to actually apply the stencil to the wood you’ll need to cut out the pattern, fix it in place, and use some of those cheap wedge-shaped cosmetic sponges you get at the drugstore.
There are actual stencil brushes but this works just as well. Put very little paint on the sponge and dab it lightly onto the surface. You’ll need to do several layers but since they’re thin it will dry quickly. This is the safest option if you’re not very experienced.
Once you’re done, meaning it’s dry and you don’t need to apply any more layers, you remove the pattern and seal everything off with polyurethane.
