Change of OMC outdrive lower unit between 1967 and 1993
The models manufactured from 1978 to 1981, the lower unit worked with a hydraulic pump to hold up the shift cable to engage the clutch into gear.
However, in 1982, engineers restructured the lower unit again, and the units made between 1978 to 1981 were asked to be returned. The sterndrive was developed to shift with a mechanical shift cable. They pull out the hydraulic shift assist pump because they found it wasn’t working correctly rounding off the forward gear and the clutch dog lug.
Few of the new shifting parts the new design required the outdrive were yet called the OMC 400 / 800 series models – but these were widely referred to as OMC mechanical shift models. This model of the 400 and 800 series was made in Canada and the US till 1985.
OMC redesigned its sterndrive in 1986 and launched the OMC Cobra gearcase. The new models were available in a wide range of motor options, including a 2.3 liter Ford, four cylinders from 1986 to 1987, and subsequently 3.0 liter Chevy, 5.0 liter – 5.7 liter – 5.8 liter, etc. To access the complete catalog of GLM aftermarket boat parts, you can click here.
