Cheap International Calls: The 3 Best Options

Got family and friends living overseas that you’re keen to stay connected with? Or maybe you’re looking to travel abroad and need a few reliable ideas on how to stay in touch with everyone back home? Not to worry when it comes to making cheap international calls we’ve got all your bases covered!

Apps For Cheap International Calls

Before we cover the free options I thought it’d be best to start with the option that I feel is the best because it combines the best of two worlds free and paid in single app.

Skype allows you to make free voice and video calls as well as offer a paid calling solution but it is a little expensive.

There are apps out there that offer much lower international calling rates as well as free voice and video calling – this is my favourite option.

For example, apps like Yabb Messenger and LINE are able to offer incredibly low pricing so you can make cheap international calls for only a few cents per minute.

Pros

  • You can call both landlines and mobiles
  • Better call quality since it uses the phone lines
  • Super cheap international calling rates
  • Has VoIP option as well so you can make free calls

Cons

  • It’s not free

Free Online Calling Options

The internet has made communicating with friends and family so much easier and the best part is that it’s free! Free does come with downsides which we’ll cover in a moment.

VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) allows you to make phone calls over the internet and as you’re likely already aware you can make video calls as well.

The downside to internet calling using VoIP is that you and the person you’re calling must have a reliable and reasonable fast connection which means if you’re talking in a developing country or one of you are living out in Alaska you’re going to experience lag, drop outs, connection issues.

Pros

  • It’s free
  • It’s easy to use

Cons

  • Both parties need to have a solid internet connection
  • Need to have both parties on the same app

International Calling Cards

If you’re the type of person who prefers a more old school approach, then you’ll probably feel more at home with international calling cards.

These can be purchased from newsagents or general retail stores and offer some of the best prices for making cheap international calls.

Unlike our first two options where you select the person you’d like to call and then simply tap on their name to call them calling cards require a few more steps.

Step 1: Call the local access number

Step 2: Enter a unique PIN

Step 3: Dial the international number of the person you wish to call

Some phone card companies do have an option for PIN free dialling which saves you from having to enter in the PIN number making it a little easier.

Please do keep in mind that the phone card industry is rife with rogue companies so you’ll want to make sure that you do your due diligence when selecting a card.

Here are some things to look for:

  • Check for junk fees (admin and monthly maintenance costs)
  • Make sure there is a customer service number
  • Check the calling rates per minute including billing increments
  • Check for special fees (connection fees, disconnection fees, etc.)
  • Expiration dates
  • Is it rechargeable?

Pros

  • Perfect for making cheap international calls
  • Can be purchased online and in newsagent stores
  • Every country has them
  • Simple to use once you get used to them

Cons

  • Multi-step call process
  • A lot of scams
