INTERVIEW: Slaves

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been good! Excited to get the record out.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Bury A Lie”?

This is probably one of the heavier tracks on the album.  We think people will dig it and we’re excited to play it live.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The song started off as a riff Weston had and we built around that.  Like many songs on the album, the lyrics deal with the feelings of a troubled relationship.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

The video is out with the single! Jan 31st.

How was the recording and writing process?

We wrote and recorded the album in 6 weeks. It was just enough time to finish everything! This was our first time doing an album together and everyone just did their thing and it came together very easily. Our producer Jimmy Alexander was such a great person to have on board through the whole process. With my solo stuff, I usually write top line idea first and then put instruments around it.  This was a fun experience for me bc the guys were cranking out these rad instrumentals and I had to do my thing overtop and make sure it fit the vibe.

How did your tenure time on The Voice get to influence your music?

The voice made me think more about big vocal moments in songs- things that would stand out to an audience. I’ve tried to incorporate elements of songs I did that were really successful on the show into my writing.   I also left the show with a bigger range which has definitely effected my music.

With the great reception your previous work has been getting – does that put any pressure on you guys as you work on new material or rather the opposite?

The record has been recorded since the summer so really the only pressure is figuring out which song to drop next! It’s been pretty fun seeing the reactions from everyone.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

New album, ‘To Better Days’ in 2020. Lots of videos. That’s all we can say.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

No release date.

Any plans to hit the road?

Looking at some dates in spring/summer.  Taking the time now to finalize mixes and get album art together for the album.

What else is happening next in Slaves’ world?

Be on the look out for new music- there’s a lot coming.
