Under their musical alter ego Vargas & Lagola, two of Sweden’s most successful songwriters and producers (Salem Al Fakir, Vincent Pontare) with over 8 billion streams attributed to their music, experiments with future-retro alt-rock infused with their own out-of-the-box influences. Outside their own project, they have written music for Avicii, Madonna, Swedish House Mafia, Miike Snow, Sia, ASAP Rocky, Galantis, David Guetta, Katy Perry, and many others.
Their new single ‘Somebody That Understands Me’ is out today – ahead of their awaited debut album (Jan 31) and following the previous single ‘Forgot To Be Your Lover’. Watch here
Built up on a rippling guitar riff, ‘Somebody That Understands Me’ is a dramatic track with shades of the ‘80s rock ballad era – mixing influences from songs like White Lion’s ‘When The Children Cry’ with Al Fakir and Pontare’s contemporary touch. It features a one minute long sentimental guitar solo (02:27) by US Grammy winning producer Ludwig Göransson who’s been praised for his work for Childish Gambino and the Black Panther movie.
“It’s about finding those rare people in life who truly understand you for who you are, even though you don’t fit in the mold. It’s not an easy thing”, Vargas & Lagola comments on the song, which is a reminder to surround you with people who allow you to be yourself.
”We wanted to make a classic 12 string rock ballad in our own way. The plan that day was actually to write a song for Post Malone, but when we started with the guitar riff we got a bit carried away and it took a whole other direction.”
On their 11 tracks debut album that is out a couple of weeks after the single, on January 31, they comment: “This whole thing is a long process of finding out who we are, and the upcoming album will be a first great step for those pieces to fall into place.”
