INTERVIEW: TAURIE

1. Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Babe”?

Babe is a song about confidence in intimacy. Knowing what your partner likes and delicately giving it to them.

2. Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

No. The process of me writing any song is the beat. Hearing the beat made me feel that this song should be an intimate and sensual type of song. I try not to be vulgar or crass, but find deliberate ways to express an experience.

3. How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

It was so much fun! Putting the video together was definitely a journey; creating the choreography myself from scratch (probably my favorite part), finding the choreographer and coordinating the shooting. The shooting, videographer, my momager’s supportive energy made me feel very relaxed and comfortable to drive every aspect of it. Being allowed to express oneself was key and I was very lucky to have that in my video crew.

4. The single comes off your new EP Enigma – what’s the story behind the title?

Since this is my first official project, I want to welcome the world with different styles I can bring to them, all in one album. I chose the word ‘Enigma’ because I want fans to be surprised with each song. Though the album has a Hip-Hop/R&B feel, each one brings a different emotion. I also happen to love the meaning of the word. To me it symbolizes the uniqueness of each person, the pleasant surprise and anticipation of the next experience.

5. What role does Staten Island play in your music?

I was born in Staten Island, traveled often to London and Europe, and finally settled with my family in New Jersey. Staten Island has many fond memories of my childhood, the catholic schools, the ferry and my mothers’ few friends. The many Italian restaurants and beautiful mini culture from New York, so it brings a lot of fond memories. This album however engulfs a coming of age for me emotionally, which is really away from Staten Island. It touches on my emotional evolution in my travels across the country and continents, meeting different types of people and growing with each person.

6. What aspect of empowerment did you get to explore on this record?

My mother raised me to be confident and inclusive of everyone’s value. I grew up with that as my core belief and lately it has been my tool of inspiration and motivation respectively. Empowerment is always about how you identify your values and use it to relate to people around you. I am pleasantly surprised to see that I am not alone in creating this level of awareness, acknowledgment and respect in the world we live in today.

7. Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Any moment in life has a flood of emotions for me which I find inspiring. In songwriting and lyrics however, I let the musical instruments and the arrangements in a beat guide a specific thought – love, intimacy,

disappointment, betrayal or whatever the beat says to me. I then tap into it and a song is made.

8. How was the recording and writing process?

I write best during the day and record better at night. The mood of the night tugs at my emotions and helps me transcend the feeling effectively into my songs. Technically, I record my voice and rough draft of my songs in my bedroom before taking it into the studio to clean it up and master it. A quiet moment when the world is at work during the day helps me write poems, lyrics and songs alike. I love that ambiance. That peace also makes me more artistic to even delve into sketching my own cover art and roses. I love drawing rose buds.

9. Any plans to hit the road?

I will LOVE to hit the road as soon as I have a schedule lined up. My management team is currently working on finding best venues to perform. I also have a band, T.A.S.K that I perform with at local lounges in New jersey, so I am a little busy with that until a TAURIE tour is announced.

10. What else is happening next in TAURIE’s world?

In Taurie’s world, I am working on my third album. Each album has a significantly different flavor.

My second album, ‘Blossom’ is a summer album, elevating the excitement of summer with the beats and groove. My third album, an ode to my heritage – a NiPop (Nigerian Pop) album is also summery and fun.

Expect me in many airwaves this year. Very excited!
