Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Q&A”?
Q&A is my latest single I released in November! I wanted to showcase how much I’ve grown since my last release and I think this track was the perfect way to introduce the older me. It also served as a trial to see how my fans responded to more of an R&B sound.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I don’t know if I can pin one event that really inspired me to write this record. I’d say it was more from seeing how relationships are with people my age and observing what I’ve seen on social media. It was a great way to reach other girls in a relatable way. Especially with such a simple concept as having questions and wanting answers to symbolize feeling unsure and wanting honesty from your partner.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I actually produced my own music video to the single that I released the same day. You can watch on my VEVO account on YouTube! It was so cool to see my vision come alive and also throw in my love for acting as well.
The single comes off your new album Beginners – what’s the story behind the title?
Q&A was meant to be separate from my EP “Beginners Love” I released in February. I wrote that EP as a 16-year-old teen girl figuring out what love means and how it works. The name is actually a play on words. Instead of beginners’ luck I said beginners love. I thought it was the perfect name to say “hey I’m new at this love thing” in not so many words!
How was the recording and writing process?
I teamed up with an amazing writer and actually recorded the song in one day. I drove 5 hours to the studio, and we got straight to work! It was the fastest I’ve ever got a song done.
How does your acting background influence your music and the other way around?
My acting really helps me to get emotion to come through my voice. When I think about getting into a character to sing the song, you can hear the difference. It adds so much more to the song! It also is fun when you’re doing a music video and you know exactly what you’re doing.
What aspect of your own life did you get to explore on this record?
With this record I got to have full freedom. My EP was produced and managed by someone but this single and video was all me. Everything I wanted to do I did. It was really cool to have the chance to step up and call the shots. I got to explore my creativity and be confident in my choices as an artist.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Before I had mentioned social media. You can pretty much go on any platform these days and read about someone’s relationship. This generation is very open on social media about their situations and feelings. Although it seems foolish for teens and people my age to put their private information on the internet, there are some benefits to it like reaching other people experiencing the same things and having the same thoughts. I loved the thought of having a song that could reach so many people my age going through the same thing.
Any plans to hit the road?
Right now, I’m doing local shows but in the near future I would absolutely love to tour!! That would be so much fun!
What else is happening next in Breana Raquel’s world?
For the holiday season it’s all about family and recharging for the new year for me. 2020 does have some very exciting news already. Without saying too much, I think my fans will be very excited to hear what I’ve been working on. I’m confident it will be the next anthem my fans blast in the car! I can’t wait to share more details! 😉
