Things to know when you Search for Car Rental

Are you looking for Car Rental? Or do you need to rent a car for your vacations or for your business trips? But be sure to compare the total cost not just the advertised rate because additional charges and options can dramatically increase the base price.

What you Need to know

When you start your search to rent a car, keep in mind the following factors.

The Size of the Car is Important

The size of the car you wish to rent may influence the price you pay. In general, to illustrate car sizes, companies indicate the name of the models or report the number of passengers suggested for each vehicle.

Search and Compare

Search for the car you are interested in renting on several websites. To get an idea of what is the best price you can get, look for the rates on the websites of each car rental company and on price comparison websites.

Discounts or Special Offers

If your travel dates are flexible, you may want to rent a car on days with discounts or special prices. Try to have special prices apply to every day that the vehicle needs. If you book in advance or if you combine the car reservation with a flight or hotel stay, you might find better deals. Read the fine print section to find out the restrictions applicable to special offers, and see on which dates discounted prices are not available. Some companies also offer special rates for seniors or members of some particular organizations, such as car clubs.

Analyze the Charges

To have a complete and accurate picture of what you will pay, it may not be enough to make a comparison of the rental rates. Try to compare rental prices by analyzing “apples with apples”, that is to say including all mandatory charges and expenses and also charges for options.

There are some charges that may be quoted when booking online, but you will only find out about all applicable charges when you go to the office to pick up the car. Read your contract carefully and look at the charges that are activated when a specific event occurs – such as an accident.

Debit and Credit Card Lock

Most car rental companies block an amount of your debit or credit card to protect against charges that may exceed the authorized value. Companies do not process the blocked amount unless you do not return the car as set out in your contract. Therefore, your card’s spending limit may be reduced by the amount blocked until a few days after the date the car is returned.

Your Driver Background Record is Important

Many companies verify customer driver records when they arrive at the office, and reject those customers whose records do not comply with company standards. Even if you have confirmed a reservation, they may disqualify you for some recent infractions, including:

  • Reckless driving.

  • Violation of the law of mandatory use of the seat belt.

  • Accidents, regardless of guilt.

  • Sentences for driving intoxicated or low the effects of alcohol or drugs (DWI or DUI).

  • Ask in advance if the car rental company verifies customer driver records.

Coverage Options

Usually, car rental companies offer additional coverage options to drivers – at the cost of the customer. However, you may already be covered by your own car or owner’s insurance policies. If you have questions about coverage, read the details specified in your insurance policies. If you are traveling for business, you may have your employer’s insurance coverage. There are some credit card companies and car clubs that offer free protection to members who use their cards to pay for a car rental.
