INTERVIEW: Songwriter and Producer Nian Tong

Hi Nian, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi, I am good! Thanks for having me!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “I Do Love You”?

Yes! This song talks about the bittersweet feeling you have when you are in one-sided love. It has a warm, vintage sound but with a modern twist. The song was written and produced by me and has my buddy Josh Witt on vocal. This is our third collaboration!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Hahaha it’s all inspired by my personal life and the song itself tells the story. By the way you can check my last single “Meet You Right Away” to figure out how the story started 😀

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I have a simple but very fun animation that is on YouTube.

How was the recording and writing process?

That was a very smooth and fun process. For this song, the melody, lyrics and arrangement came to me all together at the same time, which doesn’t happen to me very often. I remember I was so excited that I jumped out of the chair at the moment I finished that last sentence of the bridge!

I recorded guitar in New York, vocal in Boston and remotely recorded the brass in Leicester, UK.

What is it about the 60s that you find so fascinating?

The one thing about many songs from that generation is that when you listen to them you just can’t help but be happy. They just sound very pure and innocent with very straightforward emotion. You don’t hear that often in today’s music.

How has Mark Ronson and Pharrell Williams influenced your writing?

Both Mark Ronson and Pharrell are phenomenon songwriter/producer who can make music that sounds very classic and very modern at the same time. And that’s what I am trying to achieve!

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yeah! I am planning to release more music in 2020. A lot of them are already in the producing progress so look forward to it!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

No particular date yet but spring for sure!

Any plans to hit the road?

As a producer, maybe never lol.

What else is happening next in Nian Tong’s world?

I am producing and collaborating with more artists and I am very stoked about it!
