Tyson Fury next for dominant WBC Heavyweight Deontay Wilder

Deontay Wilder further extended his remarkable record as a professional with a knockout of Luis Ortiz most recently. This meant ‘The Bronze Bomber’ now has a record of 42 wins, one draw and no losses, with 41 of these victories by stoppage. The one that did not finish in a stoppage he has now avenged, so every opponent he has beaten he has stopped. A stunning record and an indication of just how dangerous he has, as one of the biggest punchers in the history of the sport.

Next up for the dominant champion will see him renew his rivalry with Tyson Fury, with the fight expected to take place in February next year. The date has yet to be confirmed but it is likely to be taking place in either Las Vegas or New York City. The winner of this hugely anticipated rematch is then likely to challenge to become the undisputed champion of the division against Anthony Joshua. Bookmakers have the fight virtually evens the pair, which gives an indication of how close it is to call.

The pair previously faced off in December 2018, which provided one of the finest bouts of recent times. The fight ended in a controversial draw, so Wilder retained his WBC belt. However, many believed Fury was far ahead on the scorecards before that remarkable recovery in the final round when Wilder had landed clean. This was all the more impressive when you look at Wilder’s record, with fighters not being able to make the count.

This was shown again most recently in his knockout of Luis Ortiz. He was again down on all scorecards having lost every round going into the seventh. He then landed a sensational right hand at the end of the round and Ortiz was unable to make the count. This meant Wilder extended his record and Ortiz lost only his second fight as a professional, with both having come against the WBC champion. This was also a 10th defence of his title for Wilder, as he drew level with the record set by the great, Muhammad Ali.

He now has to face a formidable opponent in Tyson Fury, who also enters the rematch unbeaten with a record of 29 wins, no losses and one draw. Fury is renowned as more of a ‘pure boxer’, as the pair’s styles make for a fascinating fight. It is clear that if the fight goes to the score cards then it is going to be a victory for Fury. Wilder will need to stop Fury to take the victory but based on his results throughout his career, this is likely to happen. Excitement and anticipation continues to build ahead of this rematch next year.
