CD REVIEW: Raining In My Heart by La Reina
Raining In My Heart is the new album from Australian singer-songwriter Reina and her band La Reina. The album is a fresh and contemporary reworking of some of Buddy Holly’s most significant songs. With a sold-out launch behind them, impressive chart stats and growing streaming numbers, La Reina’s debut album looks set to do great things. Fronted by lead vocalist Reina, the outfit delivers on this exemplary album. Reina’s rendering of the rock and roll superstar’s songs is masterful, with her velvety voice going from tender to powerful across the varied songs. Utilising a simplified approach, Reina’s voice matched with an exquisitely played acoustic guitar makes for a wonderful and entrancing combination. Whether it’s the heart-stirring version of the single, Raining In My Heart or the intensity of Lonesome Tears, the album is consistently engaging, entertaining and hugely satisfying. What makes this album stand out is the unique treatment these timeless songs have been given. They now have a broad sweep that will certainly fit into several possible genres including country, folk-pop and blues, and would also surely be a no-brainer for those chilled out streaming playlists. Rerecording these classics is a bold move but it’s one that has paid off, the songs sound revitalised, contemporary and essential, with the raw approach highlighting a specific kind of authenticity and urgency that is a pleasure to listen to. Despite Buddy Holly’s tragic demise all those years ago, it’s albums like this that continue to show how important a cultural figure he is in the landscape of 20th century music. But aside from all this, La Reina has produced a beautifully executed rendition of tunes that will also stand the test of time. The connection between Reina and the songs is easy to hear, her compelling performances are enough to warrant having a listen to this album.
