INTERVIEW: New Zealand Hip-Hop and R&B talent VALLÉ

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Good thank you!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Star”?

For sure!

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Star is a song I wrote out of an argument with my lady, it came directly after an argument we had just had one night. I was frustrated and couldn’t sleep, so I started writing to vent, but by the second verse, I realized something, and I reminded myself that when I had nothing, she still rode me, and she was still about it, so when times get tough and disagreements occur, as they always will, I need to remind myself of all the times she has had my back, just as I did when I was writing this song”.

So perhaps the even that inspired would have been the argument maybe…

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes! It’s out now. Here are some links:

The single comes off your new album Care For Me – what’s the story behind the title?

This album is kind of like an audible movie of a period of my life where I felt lonely, overworked, stressed, isolated, depressed and I was writing fragile yet strong emotive music that was naturally spilling out of my heart. I was at a low point where I was struggling to identify people who ACTUALLY CARED FOR ME, and that’s where the title came from really…

How was the recording and writing process?

Writing was super easy, honestly just flowed as I was in the thick of this season of my life where I was questioning certain relationships etc .. Recording however was challenging at times because firstly we had to move studio which came with its own problems and secondly I was working 40-50 hours full time at my day job then recording until midnight sometimes 1am straight after shifts… That time of my life was low key hell haha

What role does New Zealand play in your music?

Great question, close to none… other than fan base but then the history here is only 500 odd years old so its still really a collaboration of many cultures and still figuring who it is as a nation, I feel. Im from Papua New Guinea, and in Star I sing in our main language – ‘Pisin’ pronounced “P-i-g-e-on” where I sing “you na me na you” that’s me saying you and I, … so that’s where Im from and where I was born.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Star is a song I wrote out of an argument with my lady, it came directly after an argument we had just had one night. I was frustrated and couldn’t sleep, so I started writing to vent, but by the second verse, I realized something, and I reminded myself that when I had nothing, she still rode me, and she was still about it, so when times get tough and disagreements occur, as they always will, I need to remind myself of all the times she has had my back, just as I did when I was writing this song”.

Any plans to hit the road?

No solid plans, but it is going to happen, I just haven’t put anything into place yet.

What else is happening next in VALLE’s world?

I’m writing some cool new music that I’m in love with!
