Hot off the holiday weekend, Malibu Ken, the duo of verbose Hip-Hop mainstay Aesop Rock and analog-synth experimenter TOBACCO (of Black Moth Super Rainbow), have expressed gratitude for the week’s most underrated day with a fresh video for “Tuesday,” a standout from their self-titled album (released back in January). The Rob Shaw-directed clip will likely give you flashbacks to this past weekend as the parallel themes of food, family, and hallucinatory nightmare logic feel particularly seasonally appropriate.
This marks a great opportunity to revisit the Malibu Ken album. As a whole, the 10-song album exudes a creative synergy that exceeds expectations, as TOBACCO’s pseudo-futuristic production style provides an unpredictably infectious and sublime bedrock for Aesop’s meticulously detailed narratives. The collection is rounded out by nightmarish sleeve art by GUNSHO replete with die-cut gatefold LP & CD sleeves (that took home awards for Best Vinyl Gatefold and Best in Show at the Making Vinyl convention) that include a perforated pop-out mask with elastic string.
Head Honcho, Editor in Chief and writer here on VENTS. I don't like walking on the beach, but I love playing the guitar and geeking out about music. I am also a movie maniac and 6 hours sleeper.
