INTERVIEW: Kimberly Dawn

Photographer: Bobby Quillard

Hi Kimberly, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you for having me. I am so good. I have been quite busy as I have been going back and forth from LA to Nashville this past year. I have been writing a lot for my upcoming EP.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Slow Dancin’ In The Dark”?

So I wrote and recorded this song a year ago. It’s so fun to see it getting the attention that it’s getting right now.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I love to write songs about my own experiences but also other people’s experiences. This particular song was just a fun idea I had and we got a great song out of it.

How was the recording and writing process?

Some songs come really quick during a writing session while others take time. This particular song was written within a couple hours and when I recorded it I felt like it just flowed so easy. Let me tell you I can’t say that about all my songs either.

What role does Nashville play in your music?

Nashville plays a big role in my music. I travel there quite a bit to write. I feel like I’m able to get into a creative space there probably because I step away from my busy schedule in LA and just focus on music when I’m in Nashville. I feel like my mind is less cluttered when I’m there.

Having collaborated with others throughout your career – is the approach any different when you are working with someone else rather than on your own?

I have collaborated with many people over the years. I prefer to collaborate. When you’re writing it always seems to flow a little better when you are able to bounce ideas off of each other. There are definitely certain people that I have continued to work with over the years because we work so well together. Songs are created so effortlessly, it’s magical when that happens.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material? How’s that coming along?

Yes! I have new music coming soon. In December, I will be heading to Nashville to record my EP. Then in January I will be releasing a single. The EP will be released sometime in 2020. Follow me on Instagram (@officialkimberlydawn), Spotify and  Apple Music for the latest updates!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The release date hasn’t been determined yet but if I’m guessing it will be early spring of 2020.

Any plans to hit the road?

I am planning to do shows but going out the road hasn’t been planned yet. We will get the single out and then release the EP. I definitely want to get out on the road at some point in 2020.

What else is happening next in Kimberly Dawn’s world?

I just attended the Hollywood Music and Media Awards in November. I was is nominated in the country category for my song my song “Slow Dancin’ In The Dark.” I am super excited about that. I will head to Nashville in December to record. Then the holidays are coming up so I am looking forward to some quality family time. Time to relax a bit before the release of my single. All good stuff.
