It’s possible you’ve already heard the work of Jessica Jones and Tim Morrish in the cinema or your living room, seeing as the pair have spent the last few years working as prolific film and television scoring composers. The duo’s combined credits include BAFTA nominated film Pili and BBC2’s upcoming series Scandalas well as additional music cues for films such as Aquaman and Netflix series The Alienist. Jessica is a Scottish BAFTA award winning composer and has also featured as a vocalist on productions such as Netflix’s upcoming film Lost Girlsand ITV’s The Good Karma Hospital. The pair have also scored advertising campaigns for brands such as Barbour, Levi’s and Bose.
Nowthe London-based multi-instrumentalists are producing their first record together under the name of Vanbur. Today, we share ‘Human’, the first offering and namesake of their debut EP, a record rooted in moments of solitude and reflection, as well as the power of connectivity and unity.
Jessica’s haunting and ethereal vocals are at times in the foreground with dream-pop sensibilities, and elsewhere operate as an additional layer to the orchestration and instrumentation, to rich and emotive effect. The EP is both cinematic, and contemporary; influenced by Arvo Pärt, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Sufjan Stevens and London Grammar alike.
Lead single ‘Human’ grew out of Jones’ experiments around a vocal riff, which eventually became the basis of the chorus. “The production grew out of some layered vocal experiments which became a song about lighting a fire from within.” says Jones. “As the climate protests started happening in London this year, the song morphed into a piece about collective change, and the energy and power of many people uniting”.
Written and recorded in their home studios, Vanbur’sdebut E.P Human is out on January 17th and it’s a celebration of orchestral colours married with other-worldly electronic production. A stunning introduction to the work of two acclaimed musicians, who are just getting started.
