SINGLE REVIEW: Glow by Izellah

Glow is the latest track by Queensland singer-songwriter Izellah, an upbeat and life-affirming pop song that shows the remarkable talents of an incredibly gifted vocalist and songwriter. The new song follows on from her last single, Treat You, which was a wonderfully poignant exploration of a troubled friendship that resonated with not only her ever-expanding audience but with many others; that song’s unambiguously relatable lyric and captivating melodies made it a deeply moving and rewarding musical experience. With Glow Izellah has returned to familiar territory; an uplifting pop dance RnB hybrid with meaningful lyrics and a self-assured vocal performance. But unlike Izellah’s previous releases, Glow reveals a new found sense of maturity and control. This is aided by the impeccable production, with its polished atmospherics and inspired instrumentation. But the real focus is Izellah’s conviction and her fast-evolving musical style and sensibility. This record has all the ingredients to become a mega smash: a great contemporary groove, cutting edge sounds and tonal textures, a stellar vocal performance, soaring memorable melodies and a significantly direct and enlightened lyric. All of which are highly relatable to music audiences everywhere. The song begins with some of those textures, an almost brooding ambience but this then segues into the verses, with its hypnotic rhythms and Izellah’s delightful cadences. The melodic strength continues throughout, with the chorus tag, which features the line ‘I hope you know’, a particular highlight. Following another cycle of this arrangement there’s a sparse bridge section, with Izellah singing to a piano part that reflects the subtle shift in the lyrical content. But the same message is delivered. It’s an optimistic song that’s dressed in vibrant, contemporary sonic colours, and of course, like a lot of Izellah’s previous hits, incredibly catchy. The success of Glow will propel Izellah into the next stage of her career and if this new track is any indication, she is ready for that leap forward.
