SINGLE REVIEW: Ain’t Got Time by Foxie Balboa

Foxie Balboa is a new Australian rap pop artist who’s just dropped her debut track Ain’t Got Time. The track utilises elements of dance and rap to create a fun and exuberant dose of contemporary pop, and pop that has loads of attitude. The song kicks off with its Latin-flavoured rhythmic foundation and tropical house styled phrasing over the top, all underpinned by a straight dance feel. The chorus comes in soon after, and this is the main hook of the song, instantly relatable, memorable and featuring Foxie’s sassy and bold performance and, of course, a lyric that you want to sing along to the minute you hear it. A verse follows which then leads into another chorus that segues into the first of two rap sections. The arrangement of Ain’t Got Time is a good balance of these parts and seems to make the track flow effortlessly while maintaining the excitement level. The lyric is an amusing look at a relationship dynamic in trouble but it’s also about self-empowerment and self-assertion, as Foxie says, ‘If this is yo style, then I’d rather stay alone, asking me my whereabouts, stalker style’. Clearly, Foxie is not taking any crap and this attitude is enhanced by the melodic flourishes, Foxie’s restrained yet commanding cadences and a sense of humour that reveals the more serious aspect of the narrative. By referring to herself as ‘Boss babe’ Foxie is also asserting her rights and establishing an indisputable stance. The track hums with this quality, and achieves a sense of real power through its social commentary, though it’s the kind that never disavows itself of what it is in its rawest form: a fun, hooky pop track. Ain’t Got Time will no doubt get added to radio quick smart, that is if it doesn’t go viral first.
