History of Washing Machine
The first-ever washing machine was patented by James king in 1851 by using a drum. This earliest washing machine had a resemblance to the modern washing machine but it was hand-powered. The first electrical power washing machine was named ‘Mighty Thor’, was invented by Hurley Machine Company of Chicago in 1908. After that with the exponential growth of technology in past centuries, washing machines are also adopting new technology and becoming smarter, more efficient and automatic. From the scrub board to the most advanced direct-drive technology; the technology up-gradation in the washing machine is a very interesting topic to talk about. Technology has changed our way of living in the kitchen arena, home arena.
Direct Drive Technology in washing machine
The direct drive system in the washing machine was first used in 1998, invented by LG Electronics and patented in 2010. Direct drive washing machines use the mechanism in which the motor is directly connected to the rear of the washing drum, unlike conventional washing machines where the motor is connected to the drum by a belt of the pulley. The direct drive washing machines are much more efficient and reliable as compared to the conventional one. Due to the absence of pulley and chain mechanism DD washing machines reduce vibration, noise, and friction. Therefore the machine can run smoothly.
Advantages of DD washing machines
-
Less electricity consumption:
-
There is no midway connector between drum and motor in the direct drive washing machine. Motor directly operated the drum without the aid of any belt of pulley mechanism which ultimately reduces the consumption of electrical power and makes DD washing machine more electrically efficient than the belt-driven washing machines.
-
Less noise and vibration:
Friction between belt and pulley is one of the major factors to create vibration and noise in the washing machine (or any other device). In Direct drive technology Motor and drum act as a single unit which reduces noise and vibration drastically as compared to conventional belt-driven washing machines.
-
Absence of the belt slippage:
In absence of belt and pulley mechanism, DD washing machines do not of the problem of micro slipping of the belt on the pulley.
-
More working age of the machine:
Direct technology washing machines are known for their longer working age and durability. They are less affected by the outer working condition and there is no belt that can be worn out by heavy load.
Disadvantages of DD washing machine
-
The direct drive washing machine can create a lot of vibration if the load is not correctly adjusted and the machine is placed on an uneven surface.
-
In this washing machine, motor and drum work as a single unit; this reduces the volume occupied by the drum, resulting in small washing drums.
-
The price of the DD washing machine is higher than other automatic and semi-automatic washing machines.
-
Due to the use of advanced technology, it is not recommended to repair (or service) the washing machine by a local mechanic. The repair should be carried by the company appointed technician whose service can be expensive. But most of the company provide 10-20 years of warranty on the motor.
