8 Invisible Contaminants in All Types of Drinking Water

Did you know that about 77 million Americans received water from systems that violated federal protections in 2015? Are you curious about what contaminants could be floating in your water?

This article will point you toward the contaminants found in all types of drinking water. Read on to discover more about these dangers so you can find out what’s in your water.

1. Lead

Did you know that tens of millions of Americans are exposed to unsafe drinking water each year? Places like Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Washington D.C. have lead problems, not just Flint.

If children are exposed to lead they can suffer from permanent brain damage which can lead to aggressive behavior and learning disabilities. For adults, if you’re continually exposed it can lead to seizures, reproductive problems, and nausea.

If you live in one of these cities, have your water tested and make sure to look into different filters such as Filtap.

2. Natural Gas

Sadly many homes across the country have natural gas in their water. It’s easy to test for but be careful if you try this. If you hold a lighter to your faucet and it lights up, you more than likely have natural gas.

3. Atrazine

Atrazine is most common in the Mid-west and the southern United States. This is considered an endocrine-disrupting chemical. The NRDC has asked the government to phase out this chemical.

4. Arsenic

While arsenic is naturally found in the earth’s crust, many southwestern cities get their water from sources with high levels of arsenic that exceed the BPA’s safe levels.

Arsenic can increase your chances of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. It can cause brain development problems in children as well.

5. Pathogens

Parasites, viruses, and bacteria can get into your water supply and cause illness. They’re thankfully better controlled than they once were. Much more needs to be done though to protect the safety of people and their drinking water.

6. Chlorine

Chlorine is added to water in the U.S. to kill off germs, but when it’s mixed with other compounds it can cause harmful consequences. One byproduct, trihalomethanes can cause an increased risk of cancer and kidney problems.

Chlorine can also make you more susceptible to giardia which is a parasite that causes nausea, cramps, and diarrhea.

7. Perchlorate

Perchlorate has been found in many states across the U.S., and there were no federal regulations for it until the push in recent years. Perchlorate is from road flares, rocket fuel, and rocket fuel.

8. Radioactive Contaminants

There are radioactive elements found in drinking water that occur naturally. Unfortunately, there are elements that occur from energy, medicine, and nuclear energy.

This can happen due to not storing items correctly or leakage. This can lead to kidney or failure or cancer.

The Different Types of Drinking Water
