7 Incredible Benefits of Diesel in 2020

Did you know that most diesel fuel used in diesel-powered generators has been ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel? This is good news because ultra-low-sulfur diesel can help to reduce particulate matter emissions by 10-20%.

Keep reading to learn more about diesel for engines such as cars and generators and find out the benefits of diesel.

What is Diesel and Why Diesel is the Right Choice

Diesel is a type of fuel from petroleum that can provide you with greater fuel efficiency and reduce your costs in the long run. The cost of diesel is typically more expensive than gasoline, however, it has a higher energy density. Diesel can be used for generators, automobiles, boats, and machinery.

Diesel powered generators and engines work by employing compression to ignite the fuel. Whereas gasoline engines operate on a spark ignition system. A diesel generator motor draws down air into the engine and compresses it to heat up the fuel.

Diesel engines infuse air and fuel at different stages, unlike gasoline engines. Mixing the air and fuel together can limit the fuel compression and affect the overall efficiency of the engine, which is why many people prefer diesel engines.

To put that into perspective, a gasoline engine compresses air and fuel at a ratio of between 8:1 and 12:1, whereas a diesel engine compresses air at a ratio of between 14:1 and 25:1.

Diesel Generators

Diesel generators are used for both industrial and commercial use. You can use a generator for your home, such as a backup power source or for your camping trips, to heat up your stove. You can also use a generator for professional use, such as a backup power source for industrial establishments or hospitals. Generators can either be used as a backup source, or they can be used as the primary power source, depending on your needs.

You can find generators in a variety of different sizes and specifications. If you want one for personal use then getting a generator between 5-30 Kilowatts is advised. Whereas, if you want a generator for industrial use then you can get one from 30 Kilowatts to 6 Megawatts.

Benefits of Diesel

There are many advantages of diesel, for example, it can ensure overall efficiency is improved. This is particularly useful if you want to operate an engine in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.

Lower Maintenance Costs and Cheaper to Run

One of the many benefits of diesel engines is that modern diesel engines can operate at lower maintenance costs and quieter noise levels. Previous models used to be quick costly to run and produced a lot of noise, however, with newer technologies you are able to get a quieter and cheaper diesel engine.

Diesel generators are cheaper than petrol generators to run. Fuel costs per Kilowatt produced are around 30 to 50% lower than gas engines. They also are cheaper in terms of maintenance costs than petrol generators because they don’t have spark plugs or rebuild carburetors. The main maintenance cost for diesel generators and engines is the regular oil changes, however, comparatively, these maintenance costs are significantly cheaper than petrol generator maintenance costs.

Longer Life Span

A diesel engine can last around three times longer than a petrol engine. Gas engines burn hotter than diesel engines, which is why a diesel engine will last longer. This longer life span eliminates the cost of replacing your generator or engine, providing you properly maintain and care for the engine.

Safer and Less Flammable

Another benefit of a diesel engine is that they are safer than gas engines because there is less risk of ignition compared to petrol. The fuel used in a diesel engine is less flammable and less explosive too.

Fewer Services Needed

With a diesel water-cooled engine of 1800 rpm, you can expect to get between 12,000 and 30,000 hours before you need to have any major maintenance work carried out on it. A water-cooled gas engine of the same rpm will need to have maintenance work carried out on it after half of that usage, between 6,000 and 10,000.

More Portable

Diesel generators are more portable and can be transported on the back of diesel utes. This is ideal for those who like convenient generators that they can use when they are out and about because you won’t need to carry around two different types of fuel.

Disadvantages of Diesel Engines and Generators

There are of course some disadvantages of diesel engines and generators. For example, older diesel engines and generators might be louder than petrol-ran engines. However, newer models generally have addressed this issue with soundproof casing.

Due to their nature, diesel engines and generators are heavier and larger. This means that the maintenance of parts might cost more than petrol engines and generators. However, this can be offset against the number of times you’ll need to maintain your engine, which is comparatively less than a petrol generator or engine.

Another disadvantage of diesel engines is that they’re considered to be less environmentally friendly. Some models emit more emissions then petrol engines do. However, it’s possible to find a highly environmentally friendly generator so long as you go for a newer model.

Choose Diesel Powered Engines and Generators

As you can see choosing a diesel-powered engine or generator is a good idea in terms of efficiency. There are so many benefits of diesel engines, which is why many people choose to use diesel generators for their personal and their work life.

If you’re thinking of getting a diesel generator then make sure you do some research into the different types of machines available. The newer models use the latest technology to ensure that the overall efficiency is increased, which will save you a lot of money.

  1. I’m glad that the diesel generator would require less maintenance. I like the idea of having a generator for if there is an emergency, but I wouldn’t want to spend a lot of time taking care of it. I’ll definitely pick up a diesel one and have some fuel delivered if I do get a generator.
