INTERVIEW: Irish DJ Marty Guilfoyle

Hi Marty, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi guys, thanks so much for having me. I’m doing so so good thank you!! How are you?

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Me & U”?

Well it’s a cover of the iconic Cassie’s ‘Me & U’. The original is 100 bpm, so safe to say it was adjusted just a ‘little’ bit. It features the amazing Jessica Hammond on vocals who is definitely one to watch out for and who was an absolute joy to work with. The idea behind it was to reinvent a song that would be known by 90s/00’s babies and also a track catchy enough that the youth of today could potentially love. Following some of my recent college shows, it has been mind blowing chatting to teenagers who did not know it was a cover. It reached number one in the shazam charts in Ireland which means a lot to me. To think that many people made an effort to find out the name of the song when it came on the radio is crazy!!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Honestly, with this track no. Previous tracks under Konmak X Marty or KBM definitely had those moments but with this one it was made as a remix for our sets and then the idea about getting the vocal covered and the track made an original was floated and here we are now!

Any plans to release a video for the single?

As it stands not right now, however I’m sure the label knows that if it’s an option that I will 100 per cent be down for it.

How was the recording and writing process?

The process was long but it was so worth it. Originally like I said it was a remix for our sets and I worked with a great friend of mine, Conor McEvoy, on it. Another friend of mine John Gibbons decided to launch his own dance label and asked me could they take a look at it and potentially release it. By then it was decided that it was going to be my first solo track so we thought why not. We got rid of the original acapella from Cassie and started trialing different artists on it. We ended up going with Jessica, who was a perfect fit!

What was it like to work with John Gibbons and how did that relationship develop?

Absolutely amazing. He is one of the most down to earth guys I know, not just in music, but in general. He added so much with the co production and I honestly already can’t wait to work with him again.

How much did he get to influence the song?

John helped out big time with the song, and I was so happy for him to have as much a say as he did. All you have to do is look at his Spotify numbers, the guy is a genius!!

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

Absolutely. Whether it was KBM , Konamk X Marty or even now being solo , an open approach is so necessary. My latest remix of Little Hours new track ‘Dream, Girl’ had a lot of back and forth between myself and the main artist. Some might find this frustarting but personally I love it!!

Two artists from two different backgrounds working together on a final sound is always exciting!!

What role does Dublin play in your music?

Dublin in comparison to other cities can be considered quite small. Ireland to me is what’s really important. Week in and week out I tour our beautiful country and it’s that initial reaction on the dancefloor that is so important. If you can play something the crowd has never heard before and at least half of them stay for a bop, then you could be on to something.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Absolutely!!

I have a good few demos sitting on my SoundCloud almost ready to go. One is a cover of one of my favourite dance anthems of all time!!

We are on the hunt at the moment for the right vocalist.

Right now though it’s all about ‘Me & U’ and then 2020 I’ll be back with new stuff.

Any plans to hit the road?

The UK is next hopefully. I cover Ireland every week so fingers crossed ‘Me & U’ gets picked up across the pond.

What else is happening next in Marty Guilfoyle’s world?

So many big Ireland dates planned, a fitness E-Book is also on it’s way out and hopefully Santa can bring me a top 40 singles spot this christmas <3
