Hi Gavin, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’m good! thanks for having me.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Broke AF”?

I wrote this song in Orlando with my good friend Maika who produced the record. He had his studio in his mom’s garage at the time, and it was just me being real frank with the lyrics and having fun with the fact that we were making music in the garage and that there were no gold plaques on the walls or fancy cars in the garage but we still felt lucky we were in a position to make music for a living.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I’m constantly looking for that “theme” that inspires a song, like a bumper sticker. And I remember seeing a video of a skater in Venice beach, and he was saying his dream was to retire a skater there, and that he’d be broke AF but he knew he’d be happy. That thought stuck with me.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

It was so fun to make. My directer buddy John and I came up with this concept of creating these colorful boxes and getting all of our artist friends to showcase what they do and just have fun with it. We built the box and filmed my part in my garage in Austin, and the rest was filmed in Brazil where John lives. The song’s called Broke AF so we really wanted to try to make something special out of nothing to stay true to the spirit of it all, I think we spent a total of $500 making it.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was written and recorded fairly quick, which is what you hope for every time you step in the studio to create. I remember us being an hour into creating the track and Maika and I just looking at each other with that “whoa what did we just do ha” look, which is usually a good sign.

Would you call this a departure from your previous musical work?

The entire goal of this project and record was for me to push myself, try new things and experiment. I’d always walk into the studio with an “anything goes” mentality. There are moments that sound familiar but a lot of it is a departure.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

I completed a full length record and will release it sometime next year, until then I’ll release a single every month.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I don’t have a date just yet, but the record title will be “A Palace Built for Ruin”.

Any plans to hit the road?

There are plans but no dates just yet.

What else is happening next in DAGG3RS’ world?

I’m already working on the next record!
