The Stayin’ Alive campaign hits £250K target and is extended to £500K to continue the fight to save Manchester venue where Bee Gees first performed

Incredibly, in just eight days, the Chorlton Community Land Trust, (CCLT) managed to reach its target of £250K, thanks to generous donations from businesses and the public.

CCLT’s ‘Stayin’ Alive campaign to save the venue and celebrate the Bee Gees heritage has attracted support from fans around the world, as well as the Bee Gees cousins, Hazel and Justine Gibb.

As a result of this tremendous amount of support, The Co-op – who owns the building – have given CCLT an extra ten days to press on with fundraising with a new target of £500K to help raise as much as possible. The new goal will strengthen the bid and allow CCLT to have a more significant say in the final plans, which will maximise the benefits for the local community.

CCLT have a meeting with The Co-op on Monday 18 November, after which decisions will be made for the best route forward.

Many people have expressed an interest in buying shares in the scheme. It will take time to pull together the business plan and share offer documents that will allow people to make an informed decision – but CCLT is very excited that so many are keen to take a stake and help make a success of the project.

There is a lot of hard work ahead and the CCLT want to get this right. All the team behind the Stayin Alive Campaign are volunteers who are managing all the work in their spare time. CCLT will contact donors with progress and what the next steps will be.

The idea is to convert the building into a market-style food hall, a gym for the local community. There’s the potential of a GP Practice and affordable housing on the site as well. CCLT are also keen to create a new public square outside the building, aiming to integrate the upcoming re-development of the Chorlton precinct.

It’s a particularly challenging time of year with Christmas ahead, but the CCLT are urging people to save their pledge money to help this fantastic community project. As well as pledges, the CCLT are putting a shout out via social media to get in touch with any personal memories of The Gaumont or maybe even the Bee Gees themselves!
