INTERVIEW: Black Summer

Hi Rhys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Ive been great! I just got back from LA after having some writing sessions and meetings with some really cool people.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Double Edge”?

Sure, Double Edge is my newest single featuring Aston who I’ve worked with previously. The song came about from a writing session with Aston and Starley, (who has had amazing success with her song “Call On Me” which gained over a billion combined streams and literally broke Spotify) in LA. This was such an awesome studio experience. We all just clicked and it really flowed.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The song is about a toxic relationship between 2 people and how its like a double edged sword. It is quite haunting and powerful. We’ve all had an experience where we my have been in a relationship or had feelings for someone who isn’t good for us. I really wanted to capture that feeling in this song with the bass line in the drop. I wanted to match the heavy vocals with a heavy drop adding to the whole story and flow of the song. Much like a heavy heart. It wasn’t from a particular event but more of a feeling that I have experienced in the past.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

It was real chill Tim Maxx did an amazing job at capturing the feeling between the couple (Aston and David John Craig) whilst using the wolf and the crow to symbolise them. The colour pallet was perfect creating a haunting visual to go with the track.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was really exciting, such a cool experience. We spent hours and hours in there but time just flew because we were having so much fun. Compared to me, Starley is a veteran. It might seem like she’s new but she’s been grinding away at her career for a long time so it was really inspiring to be working so closely with her. Aston is fairly new too like me, but she’s a natural so it was a breeze working with her. I learnt so much from making this song and watching how they worked.

What role does LA play in your music?

A huge role. Even though the internet is making communication easier and more effective, meeting with people in person is always more inspiring. Being in the studio with other artists and in LA energises me. I love working in long sessions and coming up with new ideas on the spot along with singers. I feel like when I am in LA I can immerse myself in the music. I see my future when I am in LA.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yeah definitely I have so much on the way and I think its gonna surprise a lot of people! Every time I make a song I learn something new. I’m always creating new sounds, new beats and new ideas. I have been working very hard and growing up too.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I have a bunch of tracks close to being finished. No dates yet but I can say that I have so much music I can’t wait share that there will be lots to come.

Any plans to hit the road?

I can’t wait to hit the road especially with new music. I would love to do a gig when I’m in LA that would be amazing!!!! You never know what could happen!!!

What else is happening next in Black Summer’s world?

Essays and exams, (nearly finished year 10) sometimes it can be hard to juggle school and music. I also could be heading back to LA very soon, there is never a dull moment in Black Summer’s world.
