So you’ve met someone online and they seem to only be interested in cocktails, friends and parties. You know that the only way to go out with this person is to take them to all the best music bars in the city. Most NYC music bars don’t play music all the time, there are times when there is no music but people seem to still flock in.

  1. Skinny Dennis

This bar is based in Brooklyn that plays country music. It is a cheap place to hang out with a fun atmosphere.

  1. Little Branch

This bar is based in West Village and is uncommon. It has no sign outside and has lots of rules. It is located in a basement but serves the best cocktails. It may be overcrowded with tourists most days but you can avoid this by going on weekday nights. The place plays cool jazz music.

This bar is perfect for whiskey lovers as it specialises in whiskey. They have live jazz and blues music and is ideal for older folk.

  1. 11th Street Bar

This bar is located in Alphabet City where people tend to know each other, and like each other. It’s a dim pub with live music, sometimes jazz, folk or anything else.

  1. Mona’s

This bar is also located in Alphabet City and attracts fewer tourists than 11th Street Bar. It is a small bar where everyone is familiar with one another. They specialise in jazz and bluegrass.

  1. St Maize

St Maize is an excellent spot for dates in Williamsburg. The bar is dark and cosy with live music on most nights. You will feel comfortable to catch up, talk and even dance in this set-up. They even have a patio. If you are hungry you can go to the basement which operates as a restaurant.

  1. The dead rabbit

The dead rabbit is one of the best places to drink for all people living and working in The Financial District. It has two levels, the upstairs is upmarket and the downstairs area is more laid back and relaxed. They both have live music and feel like pubs from the 1800s. You can check the calendar to see what music is playing, however it is usually a pianist or Irish folk music.

  1. Apotheke

This bar plays jazz on most nights, or mambo. On weekends however they have a DJ. They are well-known for their seasonal cocktails.

  1. Bar belly

This place used to be called Leadbelly. It is an ideal place for a first date and they play live music on weeknights. The space is long and narrow and pretty attractive.

  1. Bar Lunatico

This bar is located in Bedford-Stuyvesant. They offer many different music options. Performances start every day from 8PM. They have a fully functional kitchen which serves food until 10PM. You can get interesting cocktails here or grab a meal while you listen to the live music.

  1. Harlem Nights

This place is a relaxed bar/ restaurant. It is perfect for intimate connections and has live bands. They have an all-night menu for bar snacks, including their famous smoked wings.

  1. Fine and Rare

This bar is quite new and owned by the same people who owned Flatiron Room. It is a small glamourous bar with amazing art décor. They have so many drink options and play lots of jazz music.

  1. Village Vanguard

This bar has been around since 1935 and is a huge tourist attraction. They specialise in jazz music and hosted legends like John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie. You would need to make a reservation and have to pay an admission fee of $30.
