INTERVIEW: Luckie

Hi L, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been well, thanks. Writing songs and eating sandwiches.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Sad People, Bad People”? Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Not particularly. It was more of a reflective process over a number of years.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I just put out a video of a live performance of the song with my band. Decided an honest performance of the song made more sense than a music video.

How was the recording and writing process?

This one was fairly straightforward by my standards. I knew exactly what I wanted from the song as I drew so much from the music i listened to growing up.

What role does London play in your music?

A rather large one, it’s the setting of all my narratives. Pretty much all of my songs are set on some street or shit pub in North East London.

How did you go on balancing the old with the much modern jazz music?

I’m not sure it’s something that people really think about, you can’t hide what you grew up on.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yeah, there’s a lot more in the pipeline.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The next tune is called Lordship Lane and it’s about the gangline by where I grew up that separates Tottenham from Wood Green.

Any plans to hit the road?

Know anyone who wants to take me on tour?

What else is happening next in Luckie’s world?

I’m brewing a lot of beer at the moment and spending a lot of time in my old boxing gym. Trying to learn a little more about what I have to say to the small audience who choose to listen.
