A thorough, professional property inspection can help establish the specific types of rodents you are dealing with, what’s attracting them, their patterns, and the best pest control method you should implement. While many people associated the cold weather with power outages, high heating bills, and other problems, the costs associated with rodent damage and control add to these monthly bills.
If you could be sure your home is infested with rodents early enough, that means you can successfully exterminate them long before they multiply. Haas Properties shows us some of the warning signs a property is hosting rats, mice, and other types of rodents.
Rodent droppings
Fresh rodent dropping is usually dark and moist. As these droppings age, they turn gray and dry out. They also crumble easily if touched. Often, both fresh and old dropping are found under sinks, near food, in cupboards, in drawers, along the rodent runways, and hidden areas. Also, it’s possible to find a higher number of droppings where rodents are feeding or nesting. If you spot rodent droppings, get your property inspected for infestation.
Foul odor
Dogs, cats, and pet rats are likely to become more active and excited in the areas with rodents. This is due to a foul odor that occurs if rodents recently entered your home. If you realize that your pets are pawing at an area which they didn’t have interest previously, get a flashlight and insect the area for rodents. If the rats or mice have multiplied their populations, you’re likely to detect stale smell coming from that area. This indicates an active rodent infestation.
Gnaw marks
Compared to droppings, recent gnaw marks are likely to be lighter and darken as they age. These marks are usually common in food packaging and wooden structures. One way to determine whether or not you have rodents in your home is to compare the gnaw marks you just saw and others that you know they are older. If the gnaw marks you found recently are lighter than the old ones, it’s a warning sign that you have rats and mice infestation in your home. Larger marks mean there are big rodents such as rats.
Rodent nests
Rodents use fabric, shredded paper, dried plants, and other similar materials to make their nests. If you spot such areas in your home, there is a good chance your property has been invaded by rodents. It’s also recommended to check for other signs of infestation such as foul odor, fresh droppings, gnawing marks, and more.
Other signs of rodent infestations
Rodents are usually attracted to organic waste and piles of trash, as these provide nesting and food. Unless you keep your yard clean and trash-free, it will become an excellent shelter and breeding area for rodents. If there are rats and mice in your home, they could be coming from your backyard. Therefore, keeping your backyard clean could eliminate the shelter and source of food for rodents.
