INTERVIEW: The Very Lazy Sundays

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Exhausted! We were gigging in Kent on Saturday night, filmed a live video on Sunday morning, then a BBC live session in Cambridge on Sunday night. Oh, and we wrote another new song somewhere in the middle of all that!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Sometimes A Broken Heart”?

You’re in the boxing ring, knocked down on the canvas ..the ref is counting. He’s got to 9 and somehow you pull yourself up, battered and bruised but with this crystal clear mind.  You then slip through the ropes and walk away from the fight, not because you’re chicken, but because you’ve taken all the punches you’re willing to take.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Ah many things; Personal experiences of heartache, loss, failure, ambition. Rubbish at boxing.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

It was really fulfilling but I expect testing for Dunk (bass) who filmed it (along with Cathy from Flash Cat productions) and then edited it all.  We filmed in Ramsgate after playing a gig the night before. We had to get up super early to catch the sunrise. it was stunning weather, which made it a lot easier.

How was the recording and writing process?

The body of the song came very quickly…we had performed at Towersey Festival and stayed in a teepee. The next morning Pete (normally Cajon) started strumming a guitar..Diyar hummed some words over the top and bang there it was!  “Sometimes a broken heart”.  From there it took quite a lot of refinement to get the arrangement right, but the day we recorded it (at The Lodge Studios, Northampton) was the day it just somehow magically fell into place.

What role does Kent play in your music?

Diyar lives in Kent (though originally from Reading).  To be honest we don’t play so much in Kent..mostly London and Hertfordshire at the moment.  If we are playing in Kent you are most likely to catch us in Ramsgate where are we are good friends with the owners of Eat’s n Beats cafe- They put on amazing original music and support other Arts.

How has Ryan Adams and Blind Pilot influenced your writing?

I don’t think it was a conscious thing.  We are a real mix of influences.   Pete is a big Ryan Adams fan so it’s bound to show up in the music in some form.  The aim was to create something vulnerable but up-lifting.  We all pulled out our Musical tool kit to make it happen.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

We have a new live EP “Love a Lot” which features Sometime a Broken Heart and three other songs. The plan in 2020 is to record a full studio album.  We have quite a few new songs in the pipeline 🙂

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Early Spring, we reckon. That’s the date, not the title – We’ve not thought that far ahead yet!

Any plans to hit the road?

We don’t gig nearly as often as most other bands as we’ve all got a lot of personal commitments that make it challenging.  Our aim is to focus on Festivals in 2020.

What else is happening next in The Very Lazy Sundays’ world?

We have a big gig on December 8th at the The David Evans Pendley Court Theatre in Tring.  If there is a gig to come to this is the one!  We’re going to record it all for a live EP, and on the night there will be beefed up arrangements of some Lazies classics…Think keys, bongos, loads of extra harmonies. We’ve also got 2 other brilliant acts playing alongside us.  Craig Joiner and In The Forest. Come, come, come!
