PREMIERE: Former Endpoint guitarist/Guilt frontman Duncan Barlow Releases New Single “She Came To Leave”

Today we are pleased to join forces with the legendary Duncan Barlow for the release of his new single “She Came To Leave,” a track that is led by sparse acoustic guitar and Barlow’s reverb-washed vocals, reflecting the isolation in which it was recorded.

About the song, Barlow comments “‘She Came to Leave’ is the fourth song off Colony Collapse, but was actually the first one I wrote for the record. As a whole, Colony Collapse examines the absurd comedy of romance and loss, and this track is focused on the concept of desire in the face of well-being. I wanted to write a song that had a traditional pop chord sequence, but which deviated occasionally into sonic dissonance. I recorded the song at my home way out in remote South Dakota and wanted to make the song distant; a pop song defamiliarized by rhythmic abstraction. The backbone of the song is the acoustic melody, but I filled out the rest of the sound with additional instrumentation, ambient sounds, and the abstracted sounds of dropped reverb chambers, canteens, cicadas, and change on the floor.”

Barlow came to prominence in the mid-90s Midwestern punk scene as the guitarist of Louisville hardcore pioneers Endpoint, as well as the Victory Records-signed Guilt and By the Grace of God. Now, Barlow is preparing to release Colony Collapse, the first album under his own name, which features contributions from bassist Jason Loewenstein (Sebadoh) and drummer Joe Plummer (The Shins, Cold War Kids, Modest Mouse).

Colony Collapse, out November 1st, was self-produced at Barlow’s home studio and finds him turning the emotional intensity that characterized his earlier work inward, exploring depression, and the absurd comedy of heartbreak through shimmering, psychedelic guitar-pop.
