It’s a sad day when you have to make that tough decision to move on from your precious mattress, but it’s one everyone’s faced with at some point in their life. The same thought goes through everyone’s head: “how will I find a mattress as good as this one?”.
That’s what we’re here to talk about today. Before you head out to the nearest mattress shop, you need to have some criteria to choose the right mattress. You’ve got to find a mattress that works for you, the next few years of restful sleep depends on it.
Learn the Different Types
Don’t walk into this process completely blind. Do some research on the different types of mattresses and find out what people are saying about them. The main types are spring, memory foam, latex, hybrid, bed in a box, and adjustable.
There are pros and cons to each type, so consider what your needs and restrictions are and go from there. For instance, an adjustable bed is better for someone with medical conditions that prevent them from getting proper sleep. Innerspring beds are affordable, but probably the least comfortable.
Beds in a box are all the rage right now, but which company should you go for? This review of Saatva raves about their beds, but there’s also Casper and Amerisleep. Research matters, so do it.
Find a Mattress With the Right Firmness
One of the big factors, when you’re mattress shopping, is its firmness. Some people like to sink into the bed and stay in the same position all night. Others prefer a firmer option because they roll around restlessly while they sleep.
If you need more spinal support, you’ll probably go for the firmest mattress you can buy, but if you find yourself with an aching neck in the morning, you’ll want something a little softer.
Everyone’s a bit different in their preference, but most people probably reside somewhere in the middle. Consult the mattress firmness scale to decide on your own firmness level.
Size Matters
The next thing you need to consider is the size of the mattress that you need. If you’re buying for yourself and a partner, that automatically disqualifies anything under double. You’ll probably want a queen or larger, though.
How much space you have in your room and the way you sleep should dictate how big of a mattress you need. Restless sleepers tend to require larger mattresses, but if you stay still all night and have a small room, there’s nothing wrong with a twin.
Your Size Matters Too
Your weight actually comes into play as well. If you’re between 130 and 230 lbs, you can probably get away with any firmness and mattress style to get a decent sleep.
Are you under 130 lbs? You’ll probably be looking for something softer that gives your smaller frame more comfort. If you’re over 230 lbs, then you’ll want something firmer to support your weight.
Try Them Out
Now that you’ve got some idea of how to find a mattress that works for you, get out there and start trying them. See, buying a mattress is like buying clothes, you cannot make a purchase without trying it out first. Head to the store and don’t be afraid to lay down on any of the mattresses you’re interested in.
